人间失格，即丧失为人的资格。这是太宰治生平最后一部作品，也是他最重要的作品。全书由作者的序言、后记，以及主角大庭叶藏的三个手札组成，描写主角从青少年到中年，为了逃避现实而不断沉沦，经历自我放逐、酗酒、自杀、用药物麻痹自己，终于一步步走向自我毁灭的悲剧，在自我否定的过程中，抒发自己内心深处的苦闷，以及渴望被爱的情愫……

Author Description

太宰治（1909-1948），本名津岛修治（つしましゅうじ），日本无赖派文学大师。出生于日本青森县津轻郡首屈一指的富豪之家，父亲同时也是位政治人物。他是家中排行倒数第二的孩子，14岁起便与友人自办同人志，发表小说、杂文及戏剧，对芥川龙之介、泉镜花的文学十分倾心。19岁时他迷上马克思主义，但明白马克思主义与自己的出身落差甚大，所以他与相关人员的往来并未持续太久。
1930年他进入东大法文系就读，1933年开始用太宰治为笔名写作，1935年以短篇《逆行》入选一届芥川赏候补，1937年起，正式投入小说创作。自1936年发表《晚年》后，被推崇为天才作家，并于1939年以《女学生》获第四届北村透谷奖。但始终与他最想赢得的芥川赏无缘。他五次自杀未遂，最后于1948年，在《人间失格》发表后，和女读者于玉川上水道投水自尽。
太宰治在短短15年的写作生涯中创作了三十看多部小说，早期包括《晚年》、《虚构的彷徨》、《二十世纪旗手》等深受注目，另有《满愿》、《快跑！梅乐斯》、《越级诉讼》等多部名作。为了生活，他曾以“黑木舜平”的笔名写了心理悬疑小说《断崖的错觉》，但太宰本身以此作品为耻。在他战后的作品中，短篇《维荣的妻子》（1947年）、中篇《斜阳》（1947年）、《人间失格》（1948年），被认为是优秀的代表作品，引起无数年轻人共鸣，《斜阳》与《人间失格》更堪称是日本战后文学的金字塔之巅。

Book Abstract

我曾见过那男人的三张照片。
第一张照片应该是他幼年时代，约摸十岁左右的年纪，身穿粗条纹和服，被众多女性前后簇拥（推测应该是他的姐妹，或是堂姐妹），站在庭园池畔旁，脑袋左偏约三十度，难看地笑着。难看？不过，就算那些感觉迟钝的人（亦即对美丑想来不甚关心的人）以平淡无趣的表情，说出“这男孩真可爱”这类敷衍的客套话，也不至于会让人觉得是虚伪的恭维，从这孩子的笑脸中，倒也非完全看不出世人所谓的可爱。然而，对稍为讲究的人来说，只要看这张照片一眼，也许就会颇感不悦地说一句“这孩子长得真不讨喜”，随手将照片往外扔，就像拂去身上的毛毛虫一般。
那孩子的笑脸，愈看愈让人感到莫名阴森。那根本就称不上笑脸。这孩子完全没笑，他那紧握的双拳可证明。没有人可以一面握拳一面微笑。是猴子，那是猴子的笑脸——脸上挤满丑陋的皱纹。就是如此古怪、丑恶，看了浑身不舒服的表情，教人很想说他是“脸皱成一团的小鬼”。我从未见过表情如此诡异的小孩。
他第二张照片的长相，有令人惊讶的重大变化。一身学生装扮。虽不清楚是高中时代，还是大学时代的照片，但确实是位相貌俊秀的学生。同样不可思议的是，感觉他没半点人味。他身穿一袭学生制服，白色手帕露在胸前口袋外，双腿交叉坐在藤椅上，脸上还是带着微笑。这次已不是满脸皱纹的猴子笑脸了，而是很有技巧的微笑，但与常人的微笑又有一种说不出的差异。不知该说是欠缺生命的重量，还是少了人味，反正丝毫没有真实感。不像鸟，而是像鸟的羽毛，轻盈得犹如一张白纸，就是这样的微笑。换言之，给人一种做作感。说他矫揉造作也不是，说他轻浮也不对，说他阴阳怪气也不贴切，说帅气，当然更是相去甚远。仔细端详后，会从这名俊美的学生身上，感受到某种近乎灵异故事的森然之气。我从未见过表情如此诡异的俊美青年。
第三张照片最为古怪。完全无从揣测其年纪。他头发已经略白，在一间肮脏不堪的房间（照片清楚拍出房内墙壁有三处剥落）角落，双手伸向小小的火盆烤火，这次脸上没有笑容。面无表情。仿佛他坐着双手伸向火盆，就这么自然地死去，当真是一张触人霉头、充满不祥气氛的照片。奇怪的不只这些。那张照片对脸部做了放大特写，因此我得以仔细端详他的长相。我发现他不论是额头、额头上的皱纹、眉、眼、鼻、口、下巴，全都平凡无奇，这张脸非但没有表情，甚至让人留不住印象，没半点特色可言。举例来说吧，当看完照片阖上眼，我便已将那张脸忘得一干二净。虽然还记得房内的墙壁、小火盆，但房内主角的长相却陡然烟消雾散，怎么也想不起来。无法描绘出那张脸的图画，也无法将它画成漫画。睁开眼看过之后，甚至不会有“啊，原来是长这样，我想起来了”这样的喜悦。说得更极端些，纵使睁眼再看一次照片，不但唤不起记忆，反而会让人感到悒悒不乐焦躁难耐，最后甚至想别过脸去。
即使是所谓的死相，应该也比它更有表情，更令人印象深刻吧，就算将马头硬装在人的身躯上，感觉也比这好。总之，这照片让任何人看了，总会莫名地感到心底发毛，浑身不舒服。我从未见过长相如此诡异的男子。
