One story about the Mitsubishi Group is a typical example of Shibusawa's unique thoughts regarding entrepreneurs and business activities and worth exploring in more detail. Let me begin by first introducing Iwasaki's career and his thoughts. Iwasaki Yataro was born in Aki, Kochi in 1837 and studied trade and commerce with Sakamoto Ryoma and Mutsu Munemitsu in Nagasaki. After the Meiji Restoration, Iwasaki had a close relationship with Okubo Toshimichi, the most powerful leader in the Meiji Government. Iwasaki started Mitubishi Kisen (Mitsubishi Merchant Marine) in 1869 and undertook the task of transporting military troops to Taiwan in 1875 and to Kyushu during the Battle'of Seinan (Seinan War) in 1877. He obtained huge profits from these two wars. Iwasaki's policy on business was that all profits which the company could obtain through its business activities should belong to the owner. In other words, the owner must have all responsibility for his or her company's business. Of particular significance to Iwasaki's thinking was that in order to compete with foreign companies in the international marketplace, market monopoly of a particular trade arena was required. From their perspective as investment managers, Iwasaki and Shibusawa had similar thoughts on the role of the market economy and capitalism in modern economic development. In addition, both agreed on the national goal of acquiring wealth through entrepreneurial activities. However, there were significant differences between their methods and view of the ideal shape of business society iri modern Japan.
One story in particular illustrates the difference between Iwasaki's and Shibusawa's points of view. This famous episode concerns their business thinking and the merits of monopoly as contrasted to gappon-shugi.0 Iwasaki opposed 'gappon-shugi' because itembodied an approach to business that was " slow";

前言/序言

With the conclusion of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the strands of democracy and global market economy have spread around the world. In the 20 years since then, the developed nations represented by the United States, Canada, Japan and the countries in Western Europe have made use of the special qualities of their respective regions to enjoy prosperity as never before. In the 21st century, the so-called BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China, as well have achieved rapid economic growth. Among them, China, with barely a sideways glance at Japan, the United States and the European countries, who are struggling with recession in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008, has achieved spectacular economic growth, bypassing Japan in terms of GDP in fiscal 2010 to reach the number two ranking of national economies. The momentum is such that China is expected to catch up with and overtake the United States by 2030.
Even though some developing nations have extricated themselves from poverty, many countries still remain in a state of destitution. It is not only an issue between developed countries and other countries struggling with poverty, but the disparity is widening within countries. Not only in China, India and Russia, Brazil9 but even in the United States, the internal disparity between rich and poor
has been exposed.
