《外国文学名著名译丛书：白痴》中主人公梅什金公爵是一个忠厚、善良的年轻人。正因为其善良，被人目为“白痴”。他从瑞士的某个“世外桃源”回国，被卷进彼得堡的生活漩涡。他同时被两个风华绝代的女人爱上：将军的女儿阿格拉娅，和父母双亡、经历坎坷的纳斯塔西娅·菲利波芙娜。由此引起一连串的喜怒哀乐、悲欢离合、冲突斗争，乃至凶杀。

陀思妥耶夫斯基（1821-1881）是19世纪俄国文坛上一颗璀璨的明星，是享有世界声誉的一位小说家，与列夫·托尔斯泰、屠格涅夫齐名，三人被称为俄罗斯文学的“三巨头”。他所走过的是一条极为艰辛与复杂的生活与创作道路，是俄国文学史上最复杂、最矛盾的作家之一。主要作品有《罪与罚》、《白痴》、《群魔》、《卡拉马佐夫兄弟》、《死屋手记》、《被侮辱与被损害的人》、《地下室手记》等。

臧仲伦，当代著名翻译家，江苏武进人。所译陀思妥耶夫斯基的作品尤多，如《罪与罚》、《白痴》、《群魔》、《卡拉马佐夫兄弟》、《死屋手记》、《被侮辱与被损害的人》、《地下室手记》等，其他译作有《驿站长》、《钦察大臣》、《塔拉斯·布尔巴》、《往事与随想》（与巴金合译），以及列夫·托尔斯泰的中短篇杰作、亚·奥斯特洛夫斯基的名剧《大雷雨》、屠格涅夫的《文论》等，影响广远。

伊万·费奥多罗维奇·叶潘钦将军，站在自己的书房中央，十分好奇地看着走进来的公爵，甚至还向前走了两步。公爵走到他跟前，作了自我介绍。
