价值创新：蓝海战略的基石
企业的战略行动，才是把开创蓝海的成功者和失败者区分开的一贯因素。身陷红海的企业采用的都是常规的方法，也就是在已有的产业秩序中树立自己的防御地位，竞相去击败对手。令人吃惊的是，蓝海的开创者根本就不以竞争对手为标杆，而是采用完全不同的一套战略逻辑，也就是我们所说的价值创新(value innovation)。价值创新是蓝海战略的基石。我们把它称作价值创新是因为，在这种战略逻辑的指导下，你不是把精力放在打败竞争对手上，而是放在全力为买方和企业自身创造价值飞跃上，并由此开创新的无人争抢的市场空间，彻底摆脱竞争。
价值创新对“价值”和“创新”同样重视。只重价值，不重创新，就容易使企业把精力放在小步递增的“价值创造”上。这种做法，也能改善价值，却不足以使你在市场中出类拔萃。只重创新，不重价值，则易使创新仅为技术突破所驱动，或只注重市场先行，或一味追求新奇怪诞，结果是常常超过买方的心理接受能力和购买力。因此，很重要的一点就是要把价值创新与技术创新及市场先行区分开。我们的研究显示，开创蓝海的成功者和失败者之间的分水岭，不在于尖端技术，也不在于“进入市场的时机”。这些因素有时候会存在，但更多时候，它们并不存在。只有当企业把创新与效用、价格、成本整合一体时，才有价值创新。如果创新不能如此植根于价值之中，那么技术创新者和市场先驱者往往会落到为他人做嫁衣的下场。
价值创新让我们以一种新的方法思考和实施战略，从而开创蓝海，摆脱竞争。重要的一点是，价值创新挑战了基于竞争的战略思想中最广为人们接受的信条，即价值和成本间的权衡取舍关系。常规看法认为，一家企业要么以较高成本为顾客创造更高的价值，要么用较低的成本创造还算不错的价值。这样，战略也就被看作在“差异化”和“低成本”间作出选择。与之相反，志在开创蓝海者则会同时追求“差异化”和“低成本”。
让我们再回头来看看太阳马戏团这个例子吧。双管齐下地追求差异化和低成本是该马戏团所创造的娱乐体验的核心所在。太阳马戏团建立之时，其他马戏团都集中力量去与对手看齐，并且通过对传统马戏剧目的改编，竭力扩大自己在已经收缩的市场需求中所占的份额。为此，它们努力去挖到更多著名的小丑、驯兽师。这种战略增加了马戏团的成本，而对马戏这种娱乐体验却没有做出重大的改变。结果是：成本飞升，收入却没有随之爬升，而总体需求量也在不断下降。
