Introduction

吴光华先生邀我为他的新作、上海译文版汉英大词典作序，颇有受宠若惊之感。吴先生与我首次见面已是2004年，但我以为，朋友之间不患不见，但患相见之无益，如果有益，岂恨其晚？若使我们两人早十年相见，恐怕识力各有未够坚透之处，心目尚不能如是相发。我有点相信“缘分”，对吴先生为人的谦逊、勤勉和诚笃从此极有好感，就在当他遭遇别人指谪身陷一点小小的麻烦时，我仍选择相信他这边的说辞。
吴先生编的汉英词典，是我案头的常备书。有个评家说过一句刻薄话，说是吴典中真正被查到的内容肯定远远少于一辈子无人问津的内容，那是讥诮书的水份。其实这话也恰好说中了这部汉英词典words和facts兼顾且特别致大力于后者的一大长处——按吴先生本人的说法，就是“文理工农医经法商”各科的糅合。我个人倒还曾稍嫌后者不足呢。那是我心脏不适的时候，想到吴先生的汉英词典去查“房颤”的英文说法而终不得，于是查到“心房”条内的例证群中，方始找到“心房颤动”，而那英文译文auricu.1ar fibrillation之后似又缺了医生们时常挂在嘴边的速写式AF（吴的“心室颤动”即更可怕的“室颤”英文释义后倒是附上了vf）。我一直在思考一个自以为很有趣的问题，那就是：一部大词典里有没有以及有多少一辈子无人问津的内容，这个问题又能通过何种实证方法求解。这个问题好像中外古今还没人解决。（除非移书上网挂10年，查核点击？）凭什么以此苛求于吴光华先生？
我在使用吴编汉英词典的过程中，有一条查阅心得，那就是他的兼收并蓄，有时可能失之芜杂，但能激发联想。所以最理想的用户，当是英语造诣较高的人，英语同义词的知识储备比较充分，善于举一反三的范畴串联认知，最好再辅以一本英语的thesaurus之类的“类书”。我举一个例子。最近同一位往昔的学生讨论到“八宝山革命公墓”的英文译法，蒙他告我，我国的官方译法就是“Babaoshan RevolutionarvCemetery”，洋人也接受。但我依然认为不通，八宝山又不是巴黎公社时期的拉锡兹神甫公墓，发生过革命战事；而且遍查英语词典，revolutionary只有类乎“of，relating to，or having the nature of a revolution”的词义，并无“for revolutionaries”之意。倒是查了吴编汉英得到启发，遂建议用“Cemetery for Noted或Veteran Revolutionaries”的译法。不管官方接受或不接受，白以为这个译法才是对的，其中veteran或noted不可或缺，不然为什么像乔冠华这样的人死后都进不了八宝山，还引得乔的遗孀一直耿耿于怀呢？
现在，吴编汉英的第三版即将出书，从推介样张看，原来的三卷本近4500页的内容已经精化浓缩作2400页左右的一卷本，真可谓是经过了“革命化”的流线形处理，作为大型词典，已经相当“用户友善”了。不一味追求篇幅恢弘，足见真正知众寡者方可胜，而披其叶又不伤其枝，保得柢深而求不败，更非有洞中肯綮兼之心至手到，裁剪自如的功夫不可。在中国与世界文化对话日频，既要避免双方误读，又要争取话语权的今天，这样一部汉英词典可望发挥相当的作用。希望不但是从事笔译的读者会经常使用它，即便是口译工作者也能时时翻阅（而非查阅），平日里孜孜汲取汉英对译的营养，以吴编汉英词典为主，辅以同义、反义、近义、上位、下位、同音异义、同音同形异义、辞源等工具书。敏化自己的词汇意识，熟能生巧，心至口开，以免到了同声传译等场合，临渴掘井，噬脐不及。
