一九四二年四月二十四日，布拉格的春夜暖和又美丽。
还差五分钟就到晚上十点的时候，我化装成一个跛脚老头，以这种角色所能允许的速度在大街上急急忙忙地走着。我要在大门上锁之前赶到叶林涅克的家里，去与我的“助手”米列克相会，他在那儿等着我。
尽管我知道，米列克这次不会有什么重要的事情告诉我，我也没有什么事情要告诉他。但是，如果我不去赴约的话，很可能会引起他们的恐慌——我不想让这两位好心肠的主人为我产生不必要的担忧。

毫无疑问，尤利乌斯·伏契克既是一位享誉世界的作家，又是一位顶天立地的英雄。这个伟大的名字不仅是捷克人民的骄傲，而且已经成为全世界人民反对侵略、反对暴力的一面旗帜。您手中的这本《绞刑架下的报告》，就是这位二十世纪伟大的反法西斯战士，用自己的铮铮铁骨为人类写下的一部壮丽诗篇。
一九0三年二月二十三日，伏契克出生于布拉格市斯米霍夫贫民区的一个工人家庭。少年时代，在苏联十月革命的鼓舞下，伏契克积极参加革命活动。一九二一年，刚满十八岁的伏契克就加入了诞生不久的捷克共产党，同年进入布拉格查理大学文学院读书，在完成学习任务的同时积极为党的报刊和其他进步刊物撰写文章。一九二八年，捷克共产党的出版物遭到当局查禁，伏契克受捷克文艺批评家沙尔达的委托，担任沙尔达创办的综合性周报《创造》的总编辑，很快把它打造成捷克共产党的一份重要刊物。此后，他又被任命为捷克共产党的中央机关报《红色权利报》的编辑。
一九三0年至一九三四年，伏契克先后两次访问苏联，撰文记述苏联的工承业发展状况，严词驳斥欧洲法西斯主义对苏联的攻击和污蔑。一九三二年春，他积极参加捷克北部矿工大罢工，向整个欧洲宣传报道矿工斗争的真相。在长期不懈的革命斗争中，伏契克始终坚守捷克共产党的理论宣传阵地。把自己身边的进步作家团结起来，组成一个统一的反法西斯文化战线，坚定不移地把文学创作和时事评论建立在马克思主义思想的基础上，把文学艺术当作反击法西斯主义的战斗工具，让文学作品为人类社会的进步服务。
