Book Abstract

Another part of the job is to keep traffic moving in front of the hotel.The Hotel Central is a busy place. Many cars, buses, and taxis arrive andleave. Since it is a large vehicle, the airport bus needs special help to parkat the curb.
A vehicle is something that moves and carries passengers or freight（goods or products）. Buses, trucks, automobiles, and taxis are vehicles.An airplane is an airborne vehicle. Because there is often much luggage tounload from the bus the doorman likes to make room for it at the curb infront of the hotel. If the bus can pull up to the curb, the doorman can putthe baggage right on a handcart to bring it into the hotel. If the bus unloadsthe baggage out in the street, away from the curb, the doormans workbecomes harder.
Another reason it is important to make space for the bus at the curb isthat the vehicle is so large that it can tie up （block） traffic if it parks out inthe street. Traf~c is the movement of vehicles. When traffic is tied up, orblocked, something is in the way and vehicles cannot move normally.
The doorman turns back to the guest who is getting in to the taxi. Thistourist is going shopping at a department store. A department store is a largestore that sells many different kinds of goods, of merchandise, in separateplaces, or departments. Merchandise is anything sold by a store to itscustomers （the people who buy from the store）. After the woman is seatedin the taxi, the doorman turns to the taxi driver. He speaks briefly in hisown language, telling the driver where the woman wishes to go.
The doorman often tells people: "Im a doorkeeper at the hotel, but Ialso open doors to all of the city for guests who stay at the hotel.
