他在短短一生写下的不少作品中，文学评论是很重要的一部分。当时文坛上，除了詹姆斯·罗塞尔·洛威尔之外，几乎无人可与颉颃。洛威尔一向不轻易赞扬别人，却把坡誉为“最有识见、最富哲理的大无畏评论家”。当代文学评论家埃德蒙·威尔逊也称“坡的文学评论确实是美国文坛上空前的杰作”。他一向主张“为艺术而艺术”。他的艺术主张几乎贯串于他的所有作品中，包括诗歌、短篇小说和论文。在这些作品中，他声称“一切艺术的目的是娱乐，不是真理”。他认为“在诗歌中只有创造美——超凡绝尘的美才是引起乐趣的正当途径。音乐是诗歌不可缺少的成分，对诗人力求表现超凡绝尘的美尤其重要。而在故事写作方面，艺术家就不妨力图制造惊险、恐怖和强烈情感的效果。而且每篇作品都应该收到一种效果”。
他的独创性论文如《写作的哲学》（1846），《诗歌原理》（1850），评论霍桑《古老的故事》，评论朗费罗、柯尔律治、华兹华斯、丁尼生等人的诗歌、以及评论狄更斯《老古玩店》等的作品都显示了他的精辟见解，至今仍被视为文艺批评的典范之作。

Author Description

爱伦·坡，（1809-1849），美国诗人、小说家、批评家。在西方被奉为侦探小说和心理小说的鼻祖，对唯美主义文艺思潮有一定的影响。著有《写作的哲学》《诗歌原理》及诗集《帖木尔》，在短篇小说创作方面成就最大，是第一个自觉地把短篇小说作为一种独立的文学体裁并提出短篇小说创作理论的作家。
爱伦·坡一生共写了七十篇短篇小说，收在《述异集》里。本书挑选其中的精粹篇章，这些作品奇特、诡异、幽默，读来耐人回味。
陈良廷（1929-），笔名梁定，广东潮阳人。1951年从事文学翻译工作，译作有长篇小说《都会一角》《人质》《十字军》《公民汤姆·潘恩》《教父》《乱世佳人》等。

现在几点了？
——谚语
众所周知，一般说来，世界上最好的地方是——或者，唉，曾经是——荷兰的“不知现在几点”自治城。但是它离任何一条大路都比较远，所处环境多少有些偏僻，我的读者恐怕很少有人去过那里。为了照顾没有去过那里的人，我最好对那座城市做一番描述。我为了博取公众对自治城居民的同情，准备在此讲述一下自治城范围内最近发生的一些灾难性事件，所以就更有必要描述那座城市。认识我的人都会相信，我既然自愿承担这项义务，就会竭尽全力去完成它，抱着严谨的公正态度，一丝不苟地调查事实，孜孜不倦地核对证据，这种钻研精神永远能使渴望赢得历史学家头衔的人脱颖而出。
在奖章、手稿和铭文的共同襄助下，我可以十分肯定地说，“不知现在几点”自治城原先的状态和现在保存下来的分毫不爽。但说到它起源于什么年代，很遗憾我只能采用模棱两可、似是而非的口吻，这种态度是数学家们在对付某些代数公式时经常迫不得已采用的。我可以这样说，从它这么古老、这么偏远幽僻来看，这座城市的历史不会早于有据可查的任何年代。
说到“不知现在几点”这个城名的由来，我悲哀地承认自己同样感到困惑。人们对这一棘手问题的看法莫衷一是——有的精辟，有的博学，有的则恰恰相反——而我从中挑选不出一个可被认为是令人信服的说法。仔细权衡之后，也许饭桶先生的观点——几乎和酒鬼先生的不谋而合——还算差强人意。它是这么说的：“不知现在几点”——不知，乃困惑之意——现在几点，即此刻为何时、何分、何秒。
