双亲的喜和忧
我今年整七十，上了岁数，记性就差了，加上我犯过两次精神病，脑子更像一盆糨糊。你别惊讶，我是犯过这种病，当然比较轻微。为什么犯病？三言两语很难说清，也许看完这部回忆录你就理解了。
一九一四年十一月八日我出生在长沙，原籍湖南浏阳县，小名细细，上有五个哥哥，四个姐姐。你该笑话我们家孩子成串吧！当时的人们脑子旧，再加上军阀混战、瘟疫猖獗，弱小的生命最容易被摧折，因此希望多生。我母亲生了十个孩子，只有七个长大成人，婶子大娘已经非常羡慕了。我亲眼见到左邻右舍求神拜佛保佑家里人丁兴旺、无病无灾。我父亲比较开明，不信和尚、道士，可是家里也供着祖宗牌位，每逢除夕之夜他带领全家给祖宗牌位三鞠躬，大概也是希望子子孙孙能相继不断吧！
你瞧我说话东拉西扯缺少条理。你刚才问我什么来着？噢，问我父亲的名字和工作。我父亲叫王正枢，号立庵。他是当时湖南有名的数学教员，曾经在湖南第一师范学校任教。他不但数学好，古文不错，连书法、医道也懂得一些。从我记事的时候起，就经常看见他总是身边一炉香、手中一支笔，埋在书堆里读书。听长辈念叨，父亲的藏书中有不少珍贵的古籍，可惜全部毁于长沙大火。父亲待人谦和，不论是谁，求他开帖中药方或者写副对联，他都有求必应。他对孩子更是宽厚慈爱。我记得大姐、二姐有段时间看《红楼梦》入了迷，放学后躲进小楼里不下来，家里人左一遍右一遍喊她们吃饭，她们才磨磨蹭蹭来到饭桌旁，却是一副丧魂落魄的神气，尤其是大姐，可能是边看书边落泪，两眼老是又红又肿，活像两颗熟透了的樱桃。曹雪芹的《红楼梦》，现在大家都知道是古典文学名著，倒退六十多年，长沙城里好些人家还把它当淫书呢。那些爱管闲事的婶子大娘听说我姐姐偷看《红楼梦》，就在我父亲面前絮絮叨叨，要他好好管教。你猜我父亲怎么着？他笑眯眯地洗耳恭听，就是不露一个“管”字。家里人说，这是父亲的老办法。我大姐、二姐出生在光绪末年，那时还兴女孩缠脚，婶子大娘跟父亲唠叨不休，我父亲也是不吐一个“缠”字。我两位姐姐都是天足，连家里雇请的老保姆易嫂也是大脚婆。提起易嫂，我又想起一件事。易嫂识几个字，喜欢背《三字经》，不过有时把“人之初，性本善”背成“人之初，本性善”。当我和三哥牙牙学语时，她就教我们背《三字经》，还洋洋得意地要我们在饭桌上背诵。你可以想象，我们这些易嫂的高足，背得磕磕碰碰，颠三倒四，惹得大家一片哄笑。我父亲呢？不但不笑话易嫂，还要嘉奖几句。
现在想来，我父亲主张孩子们的知识面要广一些、博一些。当然，这有个前提，必须学好正课、学好基础知识。有件事我印象很深，大约发生在我三四岁的那年夏天。小哥哥和小姐姐刚上小学不久，受了半年拘束，好不容易盼来暑假，活像脱缰的野马，整天嘻嘻哈哈地又玩又闹，连暑期作业都丢在脑后。父亲知道后，让三哥他们搬来长桌板凳，放在天井的房檐下，还教他们做了个土风扇，用许多长条的布，系在木棍上，悬挂起来，木棍连有绳子，一拉绳子，布条前后摇晃，就有凉风。对了，我应该说明一下，我们湖南的天井，相当于北京的院子。父亲把一切准备就绪后，命令三哥他们老老实实地坐在房檐下，上午亲自给他们讲书，下午督促他们做作业，除了晚上和星期天外，不许玩儿。整整一个暑假，父亲很少外出访友，也放弃了埋头读书的乐趣，陪着几个孩子复习功课，还常常替孩子们拉动土风扇的绳子。那时候，我也天天搬只小板凳坐在后面。你别以为我从小爱学习，不是的。因为上中学的大哥哥大姐姐不跟我玩，上小学的小哥哥小姐姐又不能玩。我一个人闷得慌，只好跟来了。我有时坐在板凳上打打盹，有时蹲在地上拔拔草，不过，我很喜欢听哥哥姐姐背书，那声音忽儿高，忽儿低，忽儿快，忽儿慢，好听得很。听着听着，我也听熟了。有一次，我扯开嗓子跟着背“孟子见梁惠王”，想不到惊动了父亲。父亲走到我身边，把我抱起来。我看得出来，父亲心里很高兴，连眼睛也带着笑意。后来，父亲给我起了个学名，叫王庶熙。庶熙两字出自《尚书·尧典》里的“庶绩咸熙”，意思是许多事情都振兴起来。我体会父亲的心情是希望孩子们认认真真地读好书、扎扎实实地学些本领，将来为改变国家贫穷落后的面貌出力。
父亲以为读书可以救国，发展工业可以救国，所以一心想送孩子去国外留学。第一次世界大战结束后，德国马克贬值，用中国钱在那里生活比较便宜，因此父亲把平时省吃俭用积攒的钱，以及临时挪借来的一笔款子，都交给我大哥王人旋，让他去德国求学。听说大哥临走时，父亲再三嘱咐他多学些外国的先进技术，回来发展民族工业，振兴中华。父亲真是一片苦心呀。
大哥在留德期间结识了朱德同志，加入了中国共产党。他对朱德同志印象极深。他告诉过我们，留德期间，中国人开起会来，大家你一言我一语地争着发言，朱德同志很少说话，而会后却抢着干那些刻蜡纸、印材料一类的具体工作。后来他转到苏联学习，与乌兰夫、孙冶方同志合住在一位苏联老大娘家，不料被王明清党时开除出党。据说起因是他给俄国女教师的俄文教学方法提了些意见。你说可笑不可笑。
