Author Description

沈祖棻(1909-1977)，女，浙江海盐人。1934年、1936年先后毕业于中央大学中国文学系和金陵大学国学研究班。曾在成都金陵大学、华西大学、江苏师范学院、南京师范学院、武汉大学执教。主要著作有：《微波辞》、《涉江词》、《涉江诗》、《宋词赏析》、《唐人七绝诗浅释》、《古典诗歌论丛》、《古诗今选》等(后两种与程干帆合著)。

菩萨蛮
无名氏
平林漠漠烟如织，寒山一带伤心碧。暝色入高楼，有人楼上愁。
玉梯空伫立，宿鸟归飞急。何处是归程？长亭连短亭。
这首词相传是李白所作，最初著录于北宋释文莹的《湘山野录》。据说，魏泰在鼎州(今湖南常德)沧水驿驿楼的墙壁上看到这首词，不知道是什么人做的。后来到了长沙，在曾布家中得见古集，才知道是出于李白之手。古集，亦作古风集，今天已经完全不知道是一种什么书。但从此，这首词就算是李白的作品了。但从明朝胡应麟的《庄岳委谈》起，就因为(菩萨蛮]一曲，据唐人苏鹗《杜阳杂编》的记载，始于晚唐宣宗的时候，生活在盛唐时代的李白不可能用这个调子填词，疑心它是出于晚唐人的手笔，而嫁名于李白。近人况周颐的《餐樱庑词话》则举出[菩萨蛮]的曲名，已见于盛唐时代人崔令钦的《教坊记》，以证其早出，可被李白采用。而浦江清先生《词的讲解》则又说《教坊记》既系杂记教坊掌故的书，后人自然可以随时增编，并不能断定(菩萨蛮]曲在李白时即已存在，从而将此词的著作权归之李白。我们认为，围绕着(菩萨蛮]这个曲调出现的迟早进行争论，似乎难以解决此词是否属于李白这个问题。
我们可以走另外一条路，就是从词体的发展来考察，看这首词的题材、风格等是否可能出现在盛唐时代。答案是否定的。中唐文人开始偶尔填词，从韦应物以迄白居易、刘禹锡的作品，大体上是民歌的摹仿。但从温庭筠以下，就更其文人化了，而且走上了“自南朝之宫体，扇北里之倡风”(欧阳炯《(花间集)序》)的道路。像这首[菩萨蛮]中所表现的羁旅行役之感，在晚唐、五代词中是十分生疏的，其所表现的阔大高远的境界、浑厚清雅的风格，也完全摆脱了花间派以绮艳风情为主的影响。如果拿温庭筠著名的十四首和韦庄著名的五首[菩萨蛮]与这首词对照，就不难看出，它不但不可能出于盛唐李白之手，也不可能如胡应麟所推断的，出于晚唐温庭筠一辈人之手，而应当如浦先生所推断的，是北宋前期的产物。当时人将其嫁名李白，无非是想为这首词增高地位，使它得以流传。这一点，倒是达到了目的。
其实，这首词是否李白所作，并非重要问题。它是一首杰作，决不会因为不是李白所作而减价；李白是一位伟大的诗人，也决不会因为作了这首词而增价。
