Author Description

林肯·佩恩（Lincoln Paine），美国著名海洋史学者，供职于著名的缅因州海事博物馆，已出版专著5部（其中3部曾获奖），发表论文、书评等百余篇，现居波特兰。2009年至2012年间，担任南缅因大学奥舍地图图书馆诺曼·H. 摩斯远洋客轮收藏展的客席策展人与档案管理员，自2006年起，担任莱顿大学国际欧洲扩张与全球关系史研究杂志《行程》（Itinerario）的主编。

《海洋与文明》是一部跨国界、跨学科的历史著作，主要关注各块大陆之间的海上联系，并揭示其中重大的跨文化影响和变化。尽管书中并不缺乏关于帝国、王国和城邦的故事，但沿海地区与海上航路也占据着同样重要的位置，来自不同地区的人们在那里不仅交换商品，也交换着语言、思想和宗教，并接触到其他地区的商业、法律、审美乃至饮食。
得益于最近的一项发展，撰写一部全球海洋史变得越来越容易了，那就是海上贸易本身的日益全球化，中国等国家正在逐步夺回其自16、17世纪以来主导全球航路的地位。尤其对于中国而言，这种复兴伴随着一种很自然的好奇心，那就是在古代以及晚近的历史上，在漫长而宽阔的亚洲海岸上，海上商业和移民活动在商品与文化的传播过程中究竟扮演了怎样的角色。海上交流（以及这种活动的偶尔中断）在中国文化的形成过程中起到了重要的塑造作用，同时，它也使中国的文化和观念得以通过亚洲的海上航路广为传播。
