Book Abstract

桑乔丢下工作，领着桑桑去了苏州城看病。一个月下来，看了好几家医院，用尽了所带的钱，换得的却是与县城医院一样的结论。桑乔看过不少医书，知道医学上的事。随着结论一次又一次相同，他已不再怀疑一个事实：桑桑不久后将离他而去。桑乔已不知道悲哀，只是在很短的时间内，长出一头白发。他总是在心里不停地责备自己对桑桑关注得太迟了——甚至在桑桑已经病得不轻的情况下，还为了那点荣誉凶狠地毒打了桑桑。他对桑桑充满了怜悯与负疚。

“这种病反而可能会被一些偏方治好。”抱着这一幻想，桑乔买了一些他深知是无用的药，领着桑桑又回到了油麻地，从此开始了对民间绝招的寻找。这个行动开始后不久，线索就一天一天地增多，到了后来，竞有了无数条线索。就像过去紧紧抓住任何一个可获取荣誉的机会一样，桑乔拼命抓住这些听来可以夺回桑桑生命的线索。

在以后的许多日子里，油麻地的人经常看到的情景是：桑乔领着桑桑出门了，或是桑乔领着桑桑回家了。有时，是桑乔拉着桑桑的手在走路；有时，是桑乔背着桑桑在走路。有时是当天出门当天回来，有时则一两天或两三天才回来。归来时，总会有不少人走上前来观望。人们从桑乔脸上也看到过希望，但看到更多的是深深的无望。桑乔的样子一日比一日疲惫，而桑桑也在一日一日地消瘦。到了后来，人们再看到桑乔又从外面领着桑桑回来时，见桑乔的表情都有点木讷了。桑乔依旧没有放弃任何一条线索，并且还在一个劲儿地寻找线索。他的行为几乎变成了一种机械性的行为，能在几天时间里面，就踏破一双鞋底。

油麻地的孩子们并不懂得桑桑得的病究竟是一种什么样的病，但他们从桑桑父母的脸上和老师的脸上感觉到在桑桑的身上究竟发生了什么。当桑桑出现时，他们总显出不知如何看待桑桑的样子而远远地站着不说话。少数几个孩子，如秃鹤、阿恕，会走过来叫一声“桑桑”，但很快又不知道再与桑桑说些什么好了。那一声“桑桑”，声音是异样的，亲切而带了些怜悯。

桑桑发现，他从未像今天这样被孩子们所注意。他有一种说不出的娇气感和莫名其妙的满足感。他哀伤而又甜美地接受着那一双双祝福与安慰的目光，并摆出一副“我生病了”而不堪一击的样子。他忽然文静了，卫生了，就像当初纸月到油麻地小学来读书那会儿一样。所不同的是，现在他又多了些娇气与软弱。他心安理得地接受着大家的照顾，用感激而温柔的目光去看着帮助着他的人。他还在断断续续地上课。老师们对他总是表扬，即使他的课堂回答并不理想，即使他的作业错得太多。桑桑也并不觉得这一切有什么不合适，只是稍稍有点害羞。

在无数双目光里，桑桑总能感觉到纸月的目光。

自从桑桑被宣布有病之后，纸月的目光里就有了一种似有似无的惊恐与哀伤。她会在人群背后，悄悄地去看桑桑。而当桑桑偶然看到她的目光时，她会依旧望着桑桑，而不像往常那样很快将目光转到一边去。倒是桑桑把目光先转到了一边。

纸月知道桑桑生病的当天，就告诉了外婆：“桑桑生病了。”

从那以后，纸月隔不了几天，就会走进桑桑家的院子，或是放下一篓鸡蛋，或是放下一篮新鲜的蔬菜。她只对桑桑的母亲说一句话：“是外婆让我带来的。”也不说是带给谁吃的。而桑桑的母亲在与邻居邱二妈说起这些东西时，总是说：“是纸月的外婆带给桑桑吃的。”

那天，桑乔背着桑桑从外面回来时，恰逢下雨，路滑桥滑。纸月老远看到了艰难行走着的他们，就冒着雨，从操场边上的草垛上拔下了一大抱稻草，将它们厚厚地铺在容易打滑的桥上。趴在桑乔背上的桑桑远远地就看到了这一切。当桑乔背着桑桑踏过松软的稻草走进校园里，桑桑看到了站在梧桐树下的纸月：她的头发已被雨水打湿，其中几丝被雨水贴在了额头上，瘦圆的下巴上，正滴着亮晶晶的雨珠。
