1灰姑娘自杀那天肯定是星期五，因为从隔壁的万胜之家咖啡连锁店飘出了浓烈的鱼腥味，气味厚重得能撑起一个车库。除此以外，这是春天里晴朗温暖的一天。眼看下午的尾巴就要悄悄地溜走了，可我却一周没接到案子了。电话响起时，我正舒舒服服地把脚靠在桌子上，享受一缕缕阳光照在脚踝上的惬意。我移开罩在电话上的帽子，拿起电话，对着话筒打了个哈欠。
电话那头的声音说：“我可听到了，约翰·达尔马斯，你就不为自己感到难为情吗？你有没有听说奥斯特莱恩一案？”电话是维拉·马基打来的，他是警察局里负责谋杀案的警察，一个很好相处的家伙，不过有个坏习惯——经常丢给我一些案子，把我忙得团团转，可赚到的钱还不够买一件二手紧身外套。

马基小心翼翼地坐下，胖人都这样。他拧开威士忌的瓶盖，仔细地闻了闻，确保我没有像酒吧里那样，在威士忌的瓶子里灌上98美分一瓶的劣质酒。他倒了满满的一杯，用舌头舔了舔，一双眼睛却在打量着我的办公室。

再说了，给她注射新亚兰甲，是为了什么呢……”“行了，别兜圈子了！”我不耐烦地说，“他到底怎么做的？”“他报警了，”马基一脸严肃，接着说，“他关掉汽车发动机和手电筒，走了几个街区的距离，终于找到了医生。不一会儿的工夫，他俩就一起回到车库。医生说她已经死了，让马特森从侧门进到自己家，给当地警察局警长亲自打电话，马特森照做了。很快，警长和几个手下开着警车就到了。他们刚到不久，殡仪馆里专门处理尸体的人也到了，那周刚好轮到他们这些人做代理验尸官。他们用车把尸体拉走，一个化验员采集了血液样本，说里面有很多一氧化碳气体。验尸官对此做出公布，尸体就被火化了，案子也就这么给结了。”“好吧，既然如此，现在又有什么问题？”我问。
