Book Abstract

四月的天气晴朗而又寒冷。当钟敲了十三下时，温斯顿·史密斯紧缩着脖子，快速闪进了胜利大厦的玻璃门，他本想躲避那一阵寒风的，可由于他的动作不够迅速，一阵沙土还是跟着他刮进了玻璃门里。一进门厅就闻到一股炖烂白菜和破草垫子的气味。门厅一头的墙上，钉着一张大幅的彩色招贴画。这幅招贴画太大了，挂在室内显得很突兀，它应该挂在外面。画上是一张男人的面孔，有一米多宽。这个男人很英俊，看模样有四十五左右，留着浓密的黑胡子，面部线条很粗犷。温斯顿直接向楼梯走去，因为他知道现在停电，电梯肯定没法再坐了。即使不停电，平时电梯也是很少开的。一切都得节约，因为“仇恨期”快要到了。温斯顿住在七楼，他今年只有三十九岁，右脚脚踝处患有静脉曲张。所以他爬楼梯非常慢，中途不得不休息几次。每一层楼正对着电梯门的墙上，都挂着那幅招贴画，这让你感觉到无论到哪儿，都被画中的那双眼睛凝视着，招贴画的下部还有一行文字说明：老大哥在看着你。温斯顿一走进住所，就听到一阵圆润的声音，正在念的是有关生铁产量的数字。右边的墙壁上镶嵌着一张金属板，金属板的表面灰蒙蒙的，看上去像是一块毛玻璃。声音就是从这块金属板里传出来的。温斯顿调节了一下开关，这声音就轻了一点儿，但是播音员口中的数字听着仍然很清晰。这个装置叫做电子屏幕，声音可以调节，但是不能完全关上。温斯顿伫立在窗前，静静地看着外面。他身材原本就很瘦小，再穿上那身蓝色的党内制服，更显单薄。他头发是淡色的，肤色天生红润，因为用劣质肥皂和钝刀片刮脸的缘故，皮肤显得有些粗糙。
即使玻璃窗是关着的，也能看到外面有多寒冷。街道上的尘土和纸屑被阵阵微风卷起，原地打着转。外面阳光灿烂，天空蔚蓝，但是除了到处张贴的招贴画上的色彩，一切都显得那样苍白。在每一个关键的地方，都有一张留着黑胡子的脸向下凝视着。对面房子的正面，也挂着这么一幅画，画的下部也是同样一行文字：老大哥在看着你。现在，那双黑色的眼睛正在盯着温斯顿的眼睛看。下面的街上的那张招贴画，被撕破的一角正被风吹得不停地拍打着，上面唯一的一个词儿“英社”时隐时现。一架直升机从远处飞来，像一只蚊子似地在屋顶徘徊了一会儿，然后又绕个弯儿飞走了。那是警察巡逻队的飞机。不过，巡逻警察并不可怕，思想警察才可怕。温斯顿身后的电子屏幕还在喋喋不休地报告着生铁产量，以及第九个三年计划超额完成的情况。只要是比极低的窃窃私语大一点儿的声音，电子屏幕都可以同时接收和发出。另外，只要温斯顿在那块金属板的视野之内，他的声音和一切举止就能被人听到、看到。当然，人们无法得知自己是否被监视，什么时间被监视，只能猜测。可能他们一直都在监视你，也可能只在心情好的时候才接上你家电子屏幕的线路对你进行监视。你可以假定一下自己的生活环境：你发出的任何声音都有人听到；你在电子屏幕视野范围内的一举一动，也都被人仔细观察过。刚开始心里还会觉得别扭，后来就慢慢地习惯了。为了安全起见，温斯顿继续背对着电子屏幕。不过，背部有时也会暴露问题，这一点他非常清楚。一公里之外就是真理部的办公楼，那是一座矗立在肮脏环境中的白色大厦。他带着一点儿厌恶的想：“哼，这就是一号空降场的主要城市伦敦！”一号空降场是大洋国的一个省份，人口位居全国第三。温斯顿看着眼前那由木材撑着的墙头、钉着硬纸板的窗户、盖着波纹铁皮的屋顶、东倒西歪的花园围墙组成的十九世纪的破败老房，以及被空袭得只剩下破砖残瓦的地上长出的野草丛，还有许多鸡笼似的、像是忽然从炸弹清出的大块空地上冒出来的肮脏木房子，他努力回想着童年时代的情景，以证实伦敦是不是一直都是这样一幅景象。可是，他根本就回想不起来。他的童年记忆一片空白，仿佛发生过什么，又仿佛什么也没有发生。
