计算机网络是一个互连的计算机系统和通信系统的集合。这些计算机系统是分散的，可以在一个房间内、一个大楼内、一个校园或企业内，也可以是在一个城市内、一个国家乃至全球范围内。
计算机网络已经构成信息基础设施。计算机网络是一个覆盖整个人类世界的、复杂的信息资源存储、传输和处理的系统，这个系统包括计算机、网络设备、传输介质、互连设备、各种网络协议和信息资源，以及使用计算机网络的人和人的知识。在计算机网络中实现可靠数据传输（reliability data transfer，RDT）需要设计网络协议，计算机网络协议是网络中通信双方（计算机之间）彼此遵循的规则和约定。
人们习惯把一个复杂的问题分解成多个简单的问题。采用类似的做法，把计算机网络提供的复杂功能分散到不同的层次上，每一层次实现特定的功能，下层提供的功能是上层提供功能的基础，下层为上层提供服务，层次之间通过接口（网络软件协议）联系。网络中通信的双方均有相同的层次，通过对等层协议彼此理解、完成该层的功能。
通过对计算机网络系统采用分层的设计方法，把计算机网络的功能分散到每一层，不仅可以简化复杂问题的处理，由于各层功能实现彼此独立，也便于计算机网络系统的实现、维护和扩充。
计算机网络中的层次应划分为多少层为最佳呢？层数不能太多，也不能太少。层数太多会使网络体系结构过于复杂，层之间的接口过多，给网络设计带来困难。层数过少会造成网络功能的界面不清楚，每一层实现的内容太多，给层次功能实现带来不便。

1998年12月IETF发布了IPv6协议标准RF（22460，至今已有十余年。IPv6技术的提出是为了解决IPv4网络面临的多种问题，用IPv6协议取代IPv4协议早已成为业界的共识。众多的厂商已经在所生产的软硬件网络设备上全面支持IPv6协议，几乎所有的主流操作系统均支持IPv6协议。人们在2000年初设计出了从IPv4向IPv6过渡的时间表，双协议栈、隧道技术、翻译技术已成为IPv6过渡阶段采用的主要技术。
IPv6技术正在或已经融人了人们的生活，国内外IPv6的推广和部署一直在紧锣密鼓地进行着。IPv6技术就在人们的身边，人们在计算机网络上发送和接收的信息，此刻就在作为Internet主干网的IPv6网络上传输，人们正在使用着IPv6技术。
