然而，朱元璋又是如此复杂矛盾的一个人物，绝非简单的几句话可以定论：他屠戮功臣，但是他也严惩贪官；他实行文化专制打击读书人，可是又极为关切民间疾苦，实行休养生息的政策；他主张选用人才看实际工作能力，可是他也确立了明朝一套科举考试的制度；他养兵百万造成财攻包袱，可是同时又创立了一套屯田法减轻老百姓的负担；他是中国历史上有名的严酷皇帝，可是他又经常更像一位乡间老人，默默品尝着人间的喜怒哀乐。

Author Description

商传，历史学家，河北保定人。出身于明史世家，著名历史学家商鸿逵之子。为中国明史学会会长，中国社会科学院历史研究所研究员、学术委员、专业技术职务评审委员会委员；研究生院历史系教授、博士生导师；曾任社会史研究室主任。主要从事明史、社会史研究。承担了国家重点项目《中国通史·明代卷》（合著）、《中国历史大辞典·明史卷》（合著）的主要撰稿及组织工作，出版专著有《永乐皇帝）》、《明代文化志》等，发表论文《试论明代民屯的几个问题》、《（明太祖实录）三修本的评价问题》等数十篇。1993年获国务院颁发的政府特殊津贴。2010年《百家讲坛》邀请商传先生主讲《永乐大帝》，深获好评。2013年，《百家讲坛》再次邀请主讲《明太祖朱元璋》。本书即在此基础上润饰而成。

Book Abstract

明玉珍这个人，史书评论他说：“玉珍素无远略，然性节俭，颇好学，折节下士。”《明史·明玉珍传》就是说他这个人虽然没有什么远大理想，小富即安，但是也有优点，一是节俭，二是好学，礼贤下士，所以夏国关起门来，日子过得也还不错。
明玉珍毕竟是红巾军一部，虽然跟陈友谅闹翻了，也只是不相往来，跟朱元璋也没有发生军事冲突，只是跟元朝云南梁王战事不断，互有胜负。
明玉珍当了几年皇帝，到至正二十六年（1366）病逝了。他儿子明昇即位，当时才十岁，大臣们谁也不服谁，你杀我，我杀你，谁军力强，谁就专权，地方不大，事情不少，国是也就一天不如一天了。
就在这时候，朱元璋大军北伐，攻克大都，推翻了元朝。明昇得到消息，专门派人前去祝贺。朱元璋建宫殿要大木料，明昇不但送上木料，还送上地方土产，很是讨好朱元璋。可是当朱元璋派人让他投降的时候，他又不干了。看他这意思，他只是愿意给朱元璋的大明朝当个属国，但还是要保持独立。
有一次夏国使者到应天见朱元璋，双方还没说什么话呢，那使者就自吹自擂起来，他对朱元璋说：“其国东有瞿塘三峡之险，北有剑阁栈道之阻，古人谓‘一夫守之，百人莫过’。而西控成都，沃壤千里，财富利饶，实天府之国。”颇有些。夜郎”范儿。朱元璋听完，笑道：“蜀人不以修德保民为本，而恃山川之险，夸其富饶，此岂自天而降耶！”使者走了以后，朱元璋就用这件事教育臣下说：“吾平日为事，只要务实，不尚浮伪。此人不能称述其主之善，而但夸其国险，固失奉使之职矣。”（谷应泰《明史纪事本本》卷十一《太祖平夏》
这段话倒真不是朱元璋自我标榜，他这个人办事确实是要求务实。山川地理的优势是要利用，但是不能光靠山川险要，要想成功，还是要靠人，修德保民，才是发展的根本。
