Content Description

Introduction

“四大名捕”故事系列，到底有多少部书呢?坦白说，作为作者的我，一时也未能统计清楚。以大家比较熟悉的《四大名捕会京师》为例，目前至少有五十七种不同地区、国家的版本，改编为影视漫画等作品也逾十五次。如此换算．“四大名捕”故事至少已写了五十卷以上，字数不少于千万，版本恐也不少于二百种。
可是。其实《会京师》只是二十岁前后的“少作”，只是四位捕头的“开头”前戏。“四大名捕”往后延伸的故事。才是比较能代表这四位似侠非侠、为民除害，当官非官、锄强扶弱，身在庙堂心在野的夹缝人物和他们的遭遇。
比较精悍短小但故事情节也较完整浓缩的，首推《大对决》收录的《谈亭会》、《碎梦刀》、《大阵仗》、《开谢花》。一气呵成，悬念惊栗、推理破案，都在八至十万字内结束，最适合小品电影的架构。至于《逆水寒》，则是“四大名捕”故事里长篇架构已完成也较完整的一部，约七八十万字，起承转合，从一个惊变开始，全篇流亡中侠道逆处见情义，最适合影视剧改编。如今国内作家出版社推出全新修订版。便自这两个系列作为一个从头迈进的开始，实在是出版社侠友的明见，而且也应该是最符合作者和读者共鸣的一个版本。
至于“四大名捕”其他系列。已成名的还有几个很为读者所津津乐道或扼腕叹息的故事。例如：《四大名捕破神枪》（《妖红》、《惨绿》等），是尝试以文学诗化的笔触，来写“四大名捕”另一段轶事；《四大名捕战天王》系列，则重回武侠小说文本描叙的法则。去探讨侠骨柔情的试验；《四大名捕外传：方邪真故事》（《杀楚》、《破阵》等）。则以正统公案悬念言情的程式，融入反映现代社会中朝野斗争的现实象征里；《四大名捕走龙蛇》系列故事，则是把一些武侠的特质，还有一些本非武侠的元素，从惊栗、超能、念力、穿越、鬼魅、魔幻到怪力乱神。一一都在二十年前的这些作品里乍浮乍沉地显现。还有最具争议性的《四大名捕斗将军》（即“少年四大名捕”：《少年冷血》、《少年追命》、《少年铁手》和《少年无情》），更成了所谓超新派或新世代武侠小说试炼的兵工厂，什么题材和元素都融会其间。结果读者的反应也很激烈：爱之欲其生，恨之欲其死。

都大死大活着，使我认为这一番心血，值了。
一九八三年我初赴北京，在金台路书市里，跟几位工作室的侠友，至少找到我没见过或未拜读过的温书版本一百三十七种。
一九九四年，沈庆均兄带我去五四书店，那儿有温瑞安小说的专柜，书店老板跟我说：“一讲‘四大名捕’，人人都嗑得，很著名，至少比原作者温瑞安还著名。”我笑了。
书生爱国非易事，提笔方知人世艰。预支五百年新意，到了千年又觉陈。阿西莫夫说：“一个人必须博学、聪明、有直觉、有勇气、有运气，才有可能发明前所未有的创见。”我觉得，别的我没有，在写作武侠小说上，我借力于前辈的肩膀，还有扎根于读者的步子，总算预支了数十年新意，且不管过了多年是否变陈酿。
