本书由浙江丝绸工学院和苏州丝绸工学院合编。全书共21章，分上、下两册，上册组织部分共9章，下册纹织部分共12章。
本书在系统地讲述织物组织原理和构作方法以后，又进一步讲述提花织物的纹制工艺，并按丝织物特征，分章阐述各类提花织物的纹制设计。
本书供高等院校纺织品设计专业及丝织专业作教材之用，也可供从事纺织品设计的工程技术人员和干部阅读；各大、中专有关专业也可选用本书的部分内容作专业教材。各院校在选取各章节内容时，可不受本书编排的限制。
本书第一版于1981年第一次印刷，以后又多次重印。第二版修订工作于1987年开始，先后在江、浙、沪地区召开了讨论会，广泛听取意见后，制定了修改大纲。
本书第一版由严洁英任主编，顾平任副主编，参加编写的人员有严洁英、顾平、区秋明、钱小萍、陈先明、魏余芬、朱馨萍、张耀明、徐鑫跃、章仲雄等同志，樊计根、茹爱林、陈尉茹为本书绘图及协助工作。
本书第二版仍由严洁英任主编，顾平任副主编，参加第二版编写的人员有：区秋明（绪论及第一-六章），顾平（第七-九章、第十五-十六章、第十七章的第四-五节、第十九章），严洁英（第十章、第十二-十四章、第十八章、第二十-二十一章），魏余芬（第五-六章、第十七章的第一-三节），朱馨萍（第十一章）。陈蔚如为本书描图，陈雁、姚园园协助工作，在此表示感谢。
