在自己家里、朋友家里、福冈老家这些比较熟悉亲近的地方，他什么都吃，但在餐厅、旅途的宾馆这些生疏的地方，他就拒绝进食。哪怕自己家里做好带来的便当，在远足的地方也一口不吃。
有一次，残障儿联谊会聚在一起去滑雪旅行。大家一起在滑雪场的食堂里吃饭，彻之完全拒食，让大家为之担心。旅途的五天全靠白开水撑过来（我真切地感受到生命力的顽强，单凭摄入水分居然能挺那么长时间）。
那时他只接受水，只好在自动售货机上买些可乐、橙汁给他喝。刚好正在练习钱物交换（将在本书第7章介绍），他自己投进硬币买好饮料，开心地喝了起来。
不吃学校里的午餐，但一回家就嚷着要吃煎饼啦、饼干啦，于是马上和他一起做，他吃得挺香。隔些时间再吃晚饭，所以营养是足够的，午餐不吃也罢了，总有一天会吃吧。一进小学，班级同学人数增加，学校一律以语言来指导学生，以彻之的能力来应付这种新的环境确实捉襟见肘，勉为其难，于是出现紧张不安、混乱不堪的心境也在所难免，从而很难接受新的事物。
（保育园和小学的午餐配食的做法或有区别，再加上当时起示范作用的政嗣不在身边。）
而我又不能多提条件，要求学校既教他课堂知识又在午餐指导方面迁就彻之一下，倘若这样要求的话，就进不了普通的年级，我决定随他去吧。儿子为了适应学校生活，肯定竭尽全力，身心疲惫吧。我没有为他充分打理好周围的环境，以致他吃了不少苦头，至今我仍然为此而内疚。
