母亲（急切地）：你想告诉他你做了些什么吗？
大卫：嗯，没错，我的眼睛，我揉了一下眼睛。其实我没有必要去揉眼睛。那股劲一会儿就过去了。
吉尔（柔和地）：大卫，在你那股劲上来之前，你的爸爸妈妈在哪儿？他们在干什么？
周三的课堂上，全班正全神贯注地注视着单向玻璃后，看吉尔如何竭尽全力与大卫一家“搏斗”。在过去的一年，24岁的大卫都待在精神科病房里。因为强迫揉眼睛的行为很可能导致他失明，除了将他送往医院，似乎已没有其他的选择。吉尔起初是大卫的个人治疗师，但是在过去的四个月里，他一直都在和大卫及其父母一同进行着治疗工作。
在这四个月里，吉尔一直都把治疗的录像呈现给整个小组看。今天，是我们第一次“现场”观看家庭治疗的会谈。我们自觉已经很了解他们，对父母亲全方位关注大卫的方式也已经十分熟悉。他行为的每一细节都被赋予意义，都成了父母关注的焦点。他实在无法闪躲。
