除了HTML客户与HTML解释器外，浏览器还能包含可使浏览器执行额外任务的组件。例如，许多浏览器包含一个FTP客户，用来获取文件传输服务。一些浏览器也包含一个电子邮件客户，使浏览器能够收发电子邮件信息。浏览器自动调用了这些服务，而且用它来执行所需的任务。如果浏览器设计得好，它会对用户隐藏细节，使用户并不知道执行了一个可选服务。
11.2.5 关于web浏览器中的缓存
Web浏览器绝大部分时候是用于查看远程页面的，很少会去查看本地页面。如果浏览器在不同时间频繁连接同一个远程主机的页面，每次都必须与该主机之间创建TCP连接，则会占用大量资源，这时如果能够把访问过的页面保存在本地，就可以大大节省网络开销。因此，浏览器使用缓存来改善文档的访问：浏览器将它所取回的每个网页放人本地磁盘的缓存中，当用户选择了某网页，浏览器在取回最新的版本前先检查磁盘缓存。如果缓存包含了该网页，那么浏览器直接从缓存中获得该网页。在缓存中保持网页可以显著地改善浏览器的运行性能，可以从磁盘中读取该网页且没有网络延迟。因此对于那些拥有一个缓慢的网络连接的用户来说，比如一些拨号上网的用户，缓存特别重要。但另一方面，缓存技术也有相应的弊端，尽管在速度上进行了大幅度的改善，但是在缓存中长期保留网页并不总是令人满意的。首先，缓存可能花费大量的磁盘空间。例如，假设用户访问了10个页面，每页都包含了五个大的图像，浏览器在本地磁盘的缓存中就需要存储带有50个图像的网页文档。其次，性能的改善只对用户重复查看某页面时才有帮助，然而，许多用户查找到某网页后就停止了浏览。例如，用户查看了10个网页后决定其中9页是不需要的，因此，在缓存中存储这9张网页不但改善不了性能，反而要浏览器耗费时间来将这些网页徒劳地写到磁盘上。
