Introduction

最优控制理论诞生于20世纪50年代。当时，在蓬勃兴起的航空航天技术的推动下，在计算机技术飞速发展的支持下，人们开始研究更复杂的系统，希望系统达到某种最优指标。在此期间，庞特里雅金（Pontryagin）发展了古典变分法，证明了最大值原理，得到了处理闭集性约束变分问题的有力工具；贝尔曼（R．Bellman）依据最优性原理，发展了变分学中的哈密顿．雅可比理论，创立了寻求最优控制的动态规划法。到目前为止，庞特里雅金的最大值原理与贝尔曼的动态规划法在最优控制理论中仍占有重要地位。
最优控制理论是现代控制理论的重要组成部分，它要解决的问题是：按照控制对象的动态特性，选择一个容许控制，使得被控对象按照技术要求运行，并使给定的性能指标达到最优值。这里所说的“性能指标”是为了评价控制对象的优劣而人为规定的标准，它是以被控对象在整个工作期间的性能作为一个整体而出现的。因此，在计算机被广泛应用的今天，最优控制问题已经不仅是研究人员的理论课题，更重要的是科学技术人员在设计控制系统时所追求的目标。
