一天傍晚，比尔·格林接到一个急促的电话，是他以前的同事莉斯·迈克尔斯打来的。
她听说比尔现在非常成功，就直接说道：“你最近有时间跟我见一面吗？”从她的声音里，他听出了一丝疲惫。
比尔跟她说“好的”，然后重新安排了日程，跟她约好第二天午餐时间见面。当莉斯走进餐厅的时候，比尔注意到她面容憔悴。
两人寒暄了几句，点了菜，莉斯告诉他：“现在我得到了哈里森原来的职位。”
“恭喜你，”比尔说，“你被提升是我预料中的事。”
“谢谢，可我面临的问题也越来越多，堆积如山。”莉斯坦白地说。
“现在的情形跟原来你在的时候已经大不一样了。我们的人手少了，但工作却多得惊人，没办法把所有的事情都做完。
“而且，我觉得工作和生活都不开心，跟我希望的一点儿也不一样。”
“对了，比尔，”她转开了话题，“你看起来倒不错。”
“我确实过得很好，”比尔说，“我正在享受工作和生活。对我来说，这真是个很美妙的变化！”

“是吗？”莉斯问，“有什么表现吗？”
“嗯，我现在更能集中精力做手头的事情我从过去学到了更多的东西，而且能更好地做计划。我现在能集中精力把重要的事情做完，而不再拖延那么长时间。”
“仅仅一个故事就能让你得到这么多？”莉斯似乎难以置信。
“哦，这只是我自己从这个故事里得到的东西。不同的人会从礼物的故事中得到不同的东西，这要取决于听到这个故事时，他们在生活和工作中所处的状态。当然，也有些人听完故事后一无所获。”
