2020年，为庚子年，也为地支之始。清代刘献《广阳杂记》引李长卿《松霞馆赘言》有曰：“子何以属鼠也？曰：天开于子，不耗则其气不开。鼠，耗虫也。于是夜尚未央，正鼠得令之候，故子属鼠。”鼠作为十二生肖之首，其灵动机敏、生命力强，常寓意智慧与财富。紫禁城自1420年落成至2020年，即将迎来六百年华诞。因此，该册《故宫日历》第*个月选取与生肖鼠有关的文物，此后各月以紫禁城建筑布局为线索，展现出*幅有全景有细节、有历史有文物、有人物有故事的紫禁城六百年历史画卷。
这本书也是为纪念紫禁城落成六百周年而特别呈现。

民国时期的《故宫日历》

一百年前，帝制终结，民智初开，人们对重重宫禁中的一切充满好奇。曾为天子一人独有的内府珍藏，也开始成为公众分享文化积淀、增强民族自信的重要资源。1925年正式成立的故宫博物院，在对藏品进行整理研究的基础上，陆续编纂、出版了一系列学术研究专著和大众普及读物，为介绍故宫藏品、传播传统文化发挥了重要作用。《故宫日历》便是其中之一。
位于紫禁城西路寿安宫的故宫博物院图书馆，至今保存着1933年至1937年间的《故宫日历》。旧书市场上，也偶然可以看到当年的《故宫日历》和相关的广告印刷品。譬如这一页1935年《故宫日历》经销商所作的广告：

《故宫日历》最初出版于1932年至1936年，包括从1933年至1937年共五年的日历，每年一册，活页装订，由京沪等地商号经销；封面和日期所用文字，除个别采用时任院长易培基先生的楷书手迹和篆书、仿宋印刷体外，均集自院藏古代楷书和隶书碑拓，故宫藏品图片每日一张，历代书画、器物交杂穿插。
在那样一个动荡的年代，故宫珍宝南迁在即，博物院人事动荡波云诡谲。而小小的《故宫日历》，却年复一年地坚持着，为普通民众打开古代艺术宝藏的一扇窗，也成为许多人醉心传统文化、走上求艺之路的开端。在一些老画家早年学画经历的回忆文字中，我们发现，在当年信息相对闭塞、资源匮乏的环境下，可能就是一本《故宫日历》，为其启蒙，作其良伴。这让我们在翻开《故宫日历》那早已泛黄的书页时，不由心生敬意。
