亨利·斯各特·斯托克斯（Henry Scott Stokes）

英国著名记者，在温彻斯特学院和牛津大学新学院接受教育，毕业后，他去了日本，成为了《纽约时报》东京分社的一名记者。后曾任《金融时报》《泰晤士报》和《纽约时报》东京分社社长。亨利是作家三岛由纪夫的生前好友，也是其私交最好的外国记者。

Book Abstract

我第一次见到三岛由纪夫是在1966年4月18日，在东京外国记者俱乐部的一次宴会上，他作为贵宾在餐后发表演说。他的名字读起来短促有力，三个短元音都是重音。那时候，他正值四十一岁，风华正茂，是位公认必将荣膺未来诺贝尔文学奖的著名作家。他的太太瑶子也随行出席。三岛夫妇落座于主席位，身旁坐着的是美联社的记者约翰·罗德里克——他是当年的俱乐部主席。我的座位距离主桌还有点儿距离，但并不影响我对三岛君的观察：他身材瘦小，但体格结实，风姿凛冽，头发剪得极短，几乎是平头的造型。皮肤略显孱弱的苍白。当时我便想：毫无疑问，他过于操劳了，我知道他经常通宵写作。三岛的英语非常流利。瑶子夫人却刚好相反。她的身形也很瘦小，比丈夫年轻十岁，从相貌上也可以看得出来。瑶子夫人苗条纤弱，脸庞很圆，那时已育有两个年幼的孩子，她始终沉默寡言。

是夜，罗德里克先致敬词，简略讲述了三岛由纪夫的诸多生平业绩。三岛生于 1925 年，原名平冈公威，是东一个富庶家庭的长子，三岛由纪夫则是笔名。在校成绩优异，1944 年以班级第一的佳绩毕业于贵族学生院。年仅十九岁便专程前往东京中部的皇宫领奖——奖品是一块银怀表——还是由裕仁天皇亲自授予的。次年，也就是1945年，三岛接到征兵入伍通知，但没有通过体格检查，因而没有入伍。战后，三岛从东京帝国大学法律系毕业，又通过了最艰难、最严格的职业面试，终于顺利地进入大藏省1 工作。但不久之后，正当有望调任地方税务局局长时，他却毅然辞去了官职，决定当一个专业作家——这是一个更具挑战性的职业选择。三岛就此抓住机遇，完成了令其成名的长篇处女作小说《假面的告白》，触及同性恋的主题，于1949年正式出版。日本文坛盛赞这位二十四岁的文学天才。由此开始，三岛由纪夫的作品一本接一本地问世，速度惊人。其中，最杰出的作品包括：《潮骚》（1954年），一部日本版的《达芙妮与克洛埃》；《金阁寺》（1956年），取材于发生在京都的一起著名纵火案——战后不久，因一名僧人纵火，京都最著名的古刹毁于一旦。这两部作品都被翻译成英文，并于20世纪50年代在美国出版（虽然是《假面的告白》的译稿最先完成，但搁置几年后才出版发行，如此一来，就让《潮骚》这本相对来说更传统的小说抢先面世，由此奠定了三岛由纪夫在西方文坛的显赫地位，被评论界公认为一位不同凡响的新锐作家）。罗德里克说，三岛不只是一位小说家。他还是剧作家、体育家和电影演员。他刚刚完成一部根据他的短篇小说《忧国》改编的电影，并担任主角：一位20世纪30年代的日本年轻军官。故事描述了军官和妻子共同自杀的过程：军官剖腹，妻子割喉。罗德里克总结道，三岛是一个多面体，就好比莱奥纳多·达·芬奇再现于现代日本。这段有关达·芬奇的赞言略显夸张，得到的是三岛君慎重而含蓄的微笑。

在这平和的日子里（三岛在谈论他的婚后生活），我们虽然有了两个孩子，但有时候——仍然是这些逝去的记忆反复浮现于我的脑海。那就是战时的记忆。我还记得一个战时的场景，那时候我在飞机厂工作。为了让做工的学生们娱乐一下，那天放了一场电影。影片是根据横光利一先生的小说改编的。时间可能是在 1945年的5月时节，是战争的最后阶段，当时我才二十多岁，和所有的学生一样，无法相信我们能从这场战争中幸存。我记得电影里有这样一幕，画面里有一条街道，是银座的一条街，是战前的模样，霓虹纷艳闪烁，美丽极了。虽然屏幕上的霓虹在闪耀，但我们都坚信：此生无法看尽这样的景致，此生也再无可能见到这样的景致。可是，正如各位所知，我们现在确确实实看到了，就在银座的大街上，霓虹灯变得越来越多。可是有时候，当战时记忆重现于我的脑海，思维中便有些许困惑。战时电影中的那些霓虹灯，以及在银座街道上的真切的霓虹灯——我无法分辨哪一个才是幻觉。

这可能就是我们……我最基本的主题，也是我关于文学的最本质上的浪漫主义观念。都是死亡的回忆……还有关于幻觉的难题。

三岛说得很慢，一字一句都力图清晰。他的英文发音很古怪，极有特质：把“artist”（艺术家）读成“urtist”。尽管他的英文无论是发音还是语法都有一点不规范，但这似乎根本不会令他困扰。他完全没有装腔作势——在这一点上，他实在不像日本人。
