《21世纪年度小说选：2013短篇小说》：
国士一“我还有一天。”郝远卿步入刨冰店时，内心如是说。
1928年的南京10月，国考正隆。国考全称全国国术考试，“国术”一词是主办方发明，排除琴棋书画中医曲艺，自此只有武术可称国术。
他三十二岁，毕业于保定陆军军官学校，一年前在中央军事学校长沙分校任教官，因“思想落后”遭学生抵触而离职。
国考分为三组，组内抽签对打，双败淘汰制，不按体重分级，没有统一护具。三十二岁，站在擂台上，有着严重耻辱感，他的对手多是小他十岁的人。
好在结果好，国考赋予前三名以“国士、侠士、武士”称号。国士，一国最优人才，《史记》中是辅佐刘邦打下汉朝天下的战神韩信，所谓“国士无双”。
国士。
还有一天。
可以洗刷三十二年的所有不快……明天他将与另两组的优胜者，确定三士归属。自从遇到她，便开始转运了，国士必为他所有。
国考执行部安排有选手招待所，但选手多是师兄师弟裹挟而来，得本地富绅政要资助，一入南京，便移迁高级宾馆。他是一人而来，空荡荡招待所里，仅几个乡野拳手，实在俚陋，说不上话。
沿街闲逛，望见了她。
她是个小脸长身的女人，垂地黑裙不现腿形，但身材比例已很醉人。她做刨冰，店里兼卖烟酒，她丈夫是个英俊小伙，大眼白肤，言语和气。
每次比武前，他都会买刨冰，处得熟了，她丈夫会跟他聊天，频频发出善解人意的笑音，弟弟向哥哥撒娇的神情。
她始终是规矩妇人模样，盛完刨冰，就缩回椅子里看画报。不知她只是看图，还是识得几个字……走近她，她会礼貌站起，现出长长的身子。
除了刨冰，他今天多买了三盒烟，她丈夫说：“大哥你怎么抽上烟了？”他：“给别人买的，还个人情。”南京街头，香烟是论根卖的，三盒已是礼物。她丈夫“噢噢”应答，发出和善笑音。
他向她走去：“有纸给包一下么？”她仰脸，眼累了的倦容，站起身。
这长长的身子，是他的好运。
次日黄昏，郝远卿穿一套蓝灰军装步人刨冰店。
长沙军校教官服，大檐帽内置铜丝绷出的型，富于雄性威严。
南方军的帽子比北方军漂亮，他背离保定军校体系，投奔长沙。原以为会戴一辈子……她丈夫发出啧啧赞叹：“大哥，原来你是个当官的！”他以将领风度点头，看向她。她站着，一双累了的眼，没有惊奇。
要了碗刨冰，坐下，一勺勺吃完。
她一直站着。
从仿苏黑牛皮军用挎包掏出一物，递给她。
塔尖形奖牌，肥实，白银铸造。
“送你了。”他走出刨冰店，再没有回来。
奖牌镂刻“武士”二字。
二郝远卿南京国考后，国术大热，各地兴建国术馆。河南新县，为南北货流集散地，1929年12月建国术馆。
落于别地之后一年有余，新县乡绅要请名家。请到了石风涤。他是太极拳宗师级人物，北平授拳二十年，交谊三教九流，是军界元老、工商巨子的座上宾，有“三绝”美誉：扇面画、京胡、太极拳。
南京国考，他作为名誉裁判总长，鉴于分组竞争出现伤亡，提议为避免白热化，背离宣扬国术的宗旨，取消决赛。得到国考组委会全票赞同，定三个分组胜出者齐名，皆为“武士”。
国考，无国士。
国术馆是中等专科学校编制，各地国术馆沿袭南京中央国术馆模式，招收十四岁至十七岁青年，设有数学和音乐等普通中学课程，专业上，除了中式拳械，还开设域外武技——拳击和刺刀。
国考获武士称号的郝远卿，任课刺刀。他因报纸报道成名，不算名家，无门派背景、无官绅交谊，独独一人。
国士馆校舍非新建，当地美国教会捐出的房产。
1925年，南军北伐，宣布废除与列强的一切不平等条约，北伐结束，武汉、上海等地的租界并没有归还，但在华洋商多捐房让利，向南军建立的新政府示好。
房产本为办教会学校，主楼顶部建有钟楼。武人敏感，视分配教室的大小为地位象征。多数房间面积相近，独有一间大房，原是小礼拜堂。
石风涤给了美术教师艾可丹，开封人，二十二岁。理由是，各拳种是选修课，美术是必修课，全体学生都上，人数决定面积。
武人们松了口气，暗赞英明。

我社自1977年起，即每年编选和出版年度短篇小说选和中篇小说选，两种年选曾经深得读者的喜爱，在文学界和读者中具有广泛影响。1994年后，这项工作一度中断。21世纪肇始，根据文学界人士和读者的建议，我社决定恢复中、短篇小说年选的编选和出版工作，以便及时总结年度中、短篇小说创作的成绩，向读者集中推荐优秀的中、短篇小说，也为新世纪的文学积累做出我们的贡献。
恢复出版的中、短篇小说年选总冠名为“21世纪年度小说选”，以示我们一百年不动摇，长期做下去的决心。“21世纪年度小说选”分中篇小说和短篇小说，各编一册，于次年元月出版；编选范围为当年全国各报刊上发表的中、短篇小说，入选篇目的排列以作品发表时间先后为序。
“21世纪年度小说选”的编选工作得到许多著名文学评论家和编辑家的支持和帮助，他们应我社之邀，对当年的中、短篇小说创作状况进行深入、广泛的研讨，提出许多极有价值的选目。我们在广泛阅读的基础上，充分参考专家们的意见，严格进行编选。在此，谨向诸位专家深表谢忱。
