其书其人
本书原著法文，一般译为《21世纪(的)资本》或《2l世纪资本论》，笔者以为都有商榷余地。“资本”为直译，虽意义暖昧，尚说得过去，译为《资本论》便有望题生义之误，因为此书最大的缺失为统计资料丰富而理论贫乏。因此，，即使作者取书名时“心怀《资本论》”，且《经济学人》把他“誉”为“现代马克思”，有的报纸谈及此书时亦以“法兰西马克思”为题，但细心的读者应能看出皮克迪与马克思同调的只是看淡资本主义制度，如何矫正资本主义制度缺失的做法则完全相反。他虽然认为现行制度不公但不反对资本主义，而且相信通过连串社会、尤其是税务改革，便能拉近贫富两极的距离，进而达致资本主义制度下的社会和谐；与老马号召全世界无产阶级团结起来搞革命推翻资本主义的主张，南辕北辙。皮克迪“处理阶级矛盾”的手法固与马克思不同，《资本》的理论架构，以笔者的理解，亦嫌单薄，因此绝不能以“论”名之。
《资本》主要是论述二百五六十年来美国、英国、法国、瑞典和德国，旁及意大利、加拿大与日本的社会财富“钱落谁家”的问题。而他笔下的Capital，包括股票、债券、上地及现金，译为“财富”，似较“资本”更能达意。当然，皮克迪亦大谈2l世纪政府应如何“重新分配财富”，以拉近贫富两极进而纾解社会的“深层次矛盾”。谈的均与过去、现在及未来的财富有关，笔者认为译成“财富”更合适(为了避免读者产生误解，本文提到此书，仍从众称之为《资本》)。
《资本》去年在法国出版，据作者提供的数据，卖出了约5万本。以法国未足7000万的人口看，销情不恶。其所以没引起“识字分子”热烈讨论，笔者的解读为：法国税率已高至接近皮克迪心目中的水平(高收入个人人息税率80％)，法国有钱人(“1％”)已深受高税之苦，因此社会上对向他们课重税的提议，反应冷淡。
