《矮身材儿童266个怎么办（第2版）》：
首先，要除外生长激素缺乏症，应做生长激素刺激试验。生长激素缺乏症患儿的生长激素很低，生长速度很慢，用生长激素后生长加速明显。而体格生长发育延迟儿童，生长激素刺激试验结果正常，但有的体质性生长发育延迟儿童在青春期前做生长激素刺激试验，生长激素可以偏低，好似生长激素部分缺乏症。到青春期生长激素恢复正常。
其次，要除外甲状腺功能减退症。此病在儿童期发生的，早期除身高增长减慢和身材矮小外，智力可以正常。检查血甲状腺素（T4）和促甲状腺激素（TSH）可以确诊，治疗效果很好。
女童还应检查血染色体以除外先天性卵巢发育不全综合征。患儿身材矮小，青春期性不发育，血染色体45XO或其他类型。
体质性发育延迟儿童，青春期性发育晚是属于正常范围的。一般女孩在16岁以前，男孩在18岁以前出现性征发育。如果到了19岁，青春期仍然不来临，则可能是促性腺激素不足症，应做性激素检查。总之，经过以上检查，除外了其他疾病的可能性，结合体质性生长发育延迟的特点和父母有青春期猛长晚的历史，在医生监测身高的情况下，家长可以安心等待孩子的自然生长发育。如有一名体质性生长发育延迟的女孩，到17岁半猛长，18岁初潮，最后身高达到正常水平。
