《黑格尔全集（第27卷·第1分册）：世界史哲学讲演录（1822-1823）》：
比如，雅典公民能作为公民用普遍的方式把握自己，以至于他像他当时真正存在的那样发挥作用，所以，这种普遍的东西仅仅在于：公民是人，而且面对这种普遍性，消融了单纯是雅典公民、是这个人或那个人的特殊性。这样的特殊性是在思维之光面前消融的，犹如白雪在阳光照射下融化一样。如果思维在一个民族中如此把握普遍性，这个民族就会不再是它过去那样的东西，而是必定会拥有一些新的、更高的规定性。因此举例说，如果通过思维在一个民族那里如同在雅典人那里一样扬弃了特殊性，而思维发展到这种地步，即这个民族的特殊原则根本不再存在，那么，这个民族就不能再维持存在；另一种原则[已经出现]。在一些更高的规定性如此进入一种原则时，一种民族精神的实质性基础就发生了变化。过去是目的的东西，这时有了另一些规定。一种有待完成的新的专业绩出现在眼前。
须顺便说明，在世界史中，只要民族精神的一种原则已经变为一种更高的原则，这种民族精神此时就是作为另一个民族存在的，于是世界史就从先前存在的民族过渡到另一个民族。因为二个民族不能有更多这样的原则，不能经过更多的发展阶段；这个民族不能两次在世界史中开辟{新的）时代，虽然它在它的发展中有若干阶段。
然而这都只是它的特定原则发展的一些形式而已，一俟这发生变化，另一个民族就拥有了更高的原则。原因在于，在精神史中一些原则作为民族精神持续存在着，但它们同时也是自然的、特定存在着的现实存在，因为我们在这里并不是处在纯粹思维的基础上，而是处在现实存在的基础上。凡是精神发展的阶段，都是作为一个民族的自然规定性、自然原则存在的，或更确切地说，作为一个国家存在的；因为国家就是一个以自然形式存在的民族。在历史上，精神表现为在空间和时间中彼此分散的各种自然形态。因此，当一个确定的原则有了进一步的规定时，虽然新的东西作为迄今持续存在的东西的否定，作为宗教、习俗等等，因而作为以往存在的东西的式微，还进入民族精神中，所以是作为这种东西的规定性的否定出现的，但新的东西却是这个民族按它原初的规定性曾经所是的东西的毁灭。在肯定的特定存在中出现的更高阶段又是一种自然的东西，于是就表现为一个新的民族。所以这是变化的更进一步的环节。此中有概念在其必然性中的各个环节。这些环节都是推动进展的灵魂。
我们如果这时进一步反思民族精神一方面自然而然地死亡，一方面由思维加以改变的各个规定，{就会发现）这是一种阶段发展的进程，它不是任何东西，而只表现为[一种]向无限的进步，表现为一种in infinitum{向无限）进展，而在任何时候都达不到目标的完善过程。尽管我们已经说过，更高的原则在于，先行的东西在此只有以普遍的东西加以把握，但这种普遍的东西本身仅仅又变为一种确定的东西。在自然界里，虽然生物系列包含一种进程，所以更高的阶段本身是一种普遍的生命，然而这个阶段又表现为确定的东西；正像在自然界里一样，在历史中普遍东西也必定采取一种确定的形态，表现为确定的方式，因为我们立足于特定存在的东西的基础上，立足于各种自然形态的基地上。
