长篇小说《无愁河的浪荡汉子》上世纪四十年代即已动笔，历经动荡的岁月，几次停辍，至作者八十多岁始得以续写，现在完成的第一部《朱雀城》，描写的是作者童年生活过的故乡的风貌。
这是一部浓墨重彩的历史生活长卷，一幅多民族文化交融的边城风俗图画。作者少小离家，一生漂泊，本书的创作源于他深刻的故乡记忆和生命体验。极其生动细致地刻画了上世纪二三十年代作为湘西地区政治、经济、文化、军事中心的朱雀城，它的社会组成的各个侧面，它所经历的重要历史事件，生活在其间的形形色色的人物……种种欢乐与悲苦、呼吸与悸动，构成一座古城的勃勃生机。
小说笔法看似十分随意，实则取材极为严谨，细节准确；语言尤其值得称叹，它得力于"故乡思维"，独具朱雀特色和朱雀风格，更是文学的升华与艺术的呈现。

Author Description

黄永玉，土家族，画家、作家。
1924年8月生，湘西凤凰人，原名黄永裕。曾用笔名：椿屋大郎、黄笛、黄杏槟、牛夫子、咏喻、吴世茫、老獭、姚育水等。
自学美术、文学，以木刻开始艺术创作，后拓展至油画、国画、雕塑、工艺设计等艺术门类，在中国当代美术界具有重要地位。代表作有套色木刻《阿诗玛》和猫头鹰、荷花等美术作品。他设计的猴年邮票、“酒鬼” 酒的包装，广为人知，深受大众喜爱。
黄永玉将文学视为自己最倾心的“行当”，从事文学创作长达七十余年。诗歌、散文、杂文、小说诸种体裁均有佳作。先后出版《永玉六记》《吴世茫论坛》《老婆呀，不要哭》《这些忧郁的碎屑》《沿着塞纳河到翡冷翠》《太阳下的风景》《比我老的老头》等作品。
诗集《曾经有过那种时候》荣获1982年中国作家协会举办的“第一届全国优秀新诗（诗集）奖”。

他两岁多，坐在窗台上。
爷爷在他两个月大的时候从北京回来，见到这个长孙，当着全家人说，这孩子“近乎丑”！
不是随便谁敢说这句话的。妈妈是本县最高学府女子小学校长，爸爸是男子小学校长。
晚上，妈妈把爷爷的话告诉爸爸。“嗳！无所谓。”爸爸说。
孩子肿眼泡，扁鼻子，嘴大，凸脑门，扇风耳，幸好长得胖，一胖遮百丑。
他坐在窗台上。
前房九十五岁的瞎眼太婆，爸爸的祖母，坐在火炉膛边的矮靠椅上：
“狗狗！”
没有回答。
“狗狗！狗狗你在吗？”
“在。”
“在，为哪样不答应我？”
“我怕跌，我下不来。”
“下不来，也好答应嘛。”
“喔！”
“那你在做哪样？”
“我没做哪样，我坐着。”
“嗳！你乖，等晌午炮爸妈就放学了——你想屙尿吗？想就叫婆，婆在灶房。”
“我没想屙尿。”
“那好！想讲话吗？想，就和我讲……”
“讲过了。”
太婆笑了。
一个太婆，一个婆，和狗狗。屋里就剩下他们三人。
太婆自己跟自己说：
“都讲过，喜喜和沅沅要来……”喜喜是她大孙子的儿子，十二岁；沅沅是她嫁到南门上倪家药铺的孙女的第六个孩子，七岁。“讲来又不来，……唔，也该快了……”
狗狗有很多表姐表哥、堂姐堂哥，还有年轻的表叔堂叔，都轮着陪他玩。
他们不来，狗狗不能乱动。
窗台木头又厚又老，好多代孩子把它磨得滑溜滑溜了。一道雕花栏杆围着，像个阳台。三四个孩子在上头也不挤。窗台后面是张大写字台，两头各放着一张靠背椅。孩子玩腻了，便一层一层下到地上。
写字台上有口放桃源石的玻璃缸子，一个小自鸣钟，一个插鸡毛掸子的瓷筒，婆的铜水烟袋。孩子玩得尽兴，却是从不碰倒摆设。
楼上楼下八间房带前后堂屋，只有楼下四间房装有栏杆供观赏的大窗子。万字、寿字格窗门内开，糊着素净的白“夹帘纸”。夏天冬天都显得宁馨。
四扇窗子，以太婆的后房、婆房间的窗子最招孩子喜欢。大清早就有太阳。长到鼻子跟前的树丛直漫到城墙那头。过了城墙，绿草坡一层又一层，由绿渐渐变成的灰蓝，跟云和天混在一起。
多少多少代的孩子都爱上这里来坐，像候鸟一样。
狗狗坐在窗台上。眼前的那些红、绿、香味、声音、雨点、太阳，只是母体内子宫生活的延续。他什么也分辨不出。他吃饱了，他安全……他还需要一些时间才能“醒悟”，他没想过要从窗台上下来自己各处走走。即使想也不可能。要爬越后堂屋的门槛，绕过上楼大梯的梯脚，再翻更高的门槛才进入堂屋。堂屋两边各有四张太师椅和一张茶几，当中还有一个大方桌，底下藏着一张吃家常饭的小方桌。靠墙一口大神柜。处处埋伏的尖角很容易在脑门碰肿一个包。他小，他真的没有想过。像出壳小鸟根本不晓得蛋壳对它曾经有过什么贡献和限制。
两只鸡娘在厨房后头吵起来。鸡娘特别像不高明的作家，稍微出两本书就大喊大叫，弄得左邻右合心烦。不过鸡蛋比那些大作要实际得多。
婆进房了。她和太婆都是小脚，地方熟，“定！定！定！”走得一点也不困难。
“狗狗！快！婆抱你，捡蛋去！捡蛋给太看！”
“噢！”狗狗让婆抱下地，再抱过两重门槛，来到厨房。
鸡窝是用几个旧箩筐抹上黄泥谷糠做的，土砖砌的平台，各挖一个洞，里头垫上厚厚的稻草，夜间顶上一块板子防黄鼠狼，样子十分之大方，“岂止大方！简直是庄严嘛！像个北京的天安门！”客人见了不免夸谈。
这是孩子们的手笔。他们还计划修一座长城咧！
“狗狗摸这里，啊！一个，是一个吧！狗狗别拿，热！婆给你拿，热蛋伢崽拿多了会脸红——再摸这边，进一点，啊！呸！呸！小手手一手鸡屎，啊！不怕不怕！婆给狗狗洗——来来，过来这边，哪！看看狗狗手手没有鸡屎了罢！还不行，还有臭臭，看婆给狗狗抹点皂角荚水，搓！搓！搓！搓！搓！搓！好，狗狗不动，等婆舀水来冲手手，狗狗搓手手啦！好，抹干净手手，闻闻！不臭了！不是臭狗狗了！——歪尾巴鸡娘不乖，屙屎不屙蛋，骗狗狗，等哪天婆宰了它，让狗狗吃霸腿。”
婆婆捏着蛋，抱狗狗跨过两道门槛进了堂屋。右手边就是太婆的房门，还没进房，太婆就说话了：
“狗狗告诉太，捡了几个蛋？”
“蛋！太！太！蛋！”狗狗让太婆拉近身边。
婆把蛋递给太婆：
“就一个，那只歪尾巴陪着吵，没有蛋！”

我的文学生涯（代序）

这小说，一九四五年写过。抗战胜利，顾不上了。
解放后回北京，忙于教学、木刻创作、开会、下乡，接着一次次令人战栗的“运动”，眼前好友和尊敬的前辈相继不幸；为文如预感将遭遇覆巢之危，还有甚么叫做“胆子”的东西能够支撑？
重新动笔，是一个九十岁人的运气。
我为文以小鸟作比，飞在空中，管甚么人走的道路！自小捡拾路边残剩度日，谈不上挑食忌口，有过程，无章法；既是局限，也算特点。
文化功力无新旧，只有深浅之别。硬作类比，徒增茧缚、形成笑柄。稍学“哲学”小识“范畴”，即能自明。
我常作文学的“试管”游戏。家数虽小，亦足享回旋之乐。
平日不欣赏发馊的“传统成语”更讨厌邪恶的“现代成语”。它麻木观感、了无生趣。文学上我依靠永不枯竭的、古老的故乡思维。
这次出版的《无愁河的浪荡汉子》第一部，写我在家乡十二年生活；正在写的“抗战八年”是第二部；解放后这几十年算第三部。人已经九十了，不晓得写不写得完？写不完就可惜了，有甚么办法？谁也救不了我。
