电动力学是介绍电磁场基本规律的理论课程,它不仅是大学物理专业及相关专业的核心课程和进一步学习更高等的基础课与各类专业课的基础课程,也是现代科技必不可缺的基础知识之一,在通信、微电子、超导、电工等许多领域有具体、实际的应用。因此,适当引进国外适合我国本科教学的著名教材对促进我国本科教学的现代化十分必要。
格里菲斯教授所著的《电动力学导论》风格和特点十分鲜明:
(1)立足于“电磁理论的入门水平”,不仅包含了大学物理“电动力学”的主要内容,而且融合了我国大学物理专业“电磁学”的部分内容,使读者对电磁场理论的发展由来有更清晰的把握。作者强调对实验基础和基本概念的理解,采用对话式的语言,叙述简明,文笔流畅,避免了把物理概念湮灭在复杂的数学公式之中,因此十分有利于初学者。
(2)不仅仅局限于知识的讲授,而是让读者真正从具体问题中体会到电动力学的精髓,掌握物理概念。比如作者对电磁力不做功、电磁场动量等的解释,通过大量例题对泊松方程、镜像法求解方法的讲述等都独具特色,能够引导学生迅速地“人门上手”。
(3)作者配置了大量有启发性的习题来训练学生,这不仅可以培养学生独立思考和独立解决问题的能力,更好地掌握基本物理概念,而且把一些电动力学的内容在习题中得以体现,使得本书主线更加清晰,前、后内容的连接更加密切。此外,作者在练习题的选择上特别下工夫。习题分为基本和提高两个层次,可供不同目的和基础的学生选择,有利于学生的学习。
尽管我国已经有不少优秀的电动力学课程教材,也有一些翻译的国外教材,但是译者认为,格里菲斯教授《电动力学导论》的翻译出版还是十分有益和必要的,它可以开阔读者的眼界,从风格各异的教材中取长补短,深化我们对电动力学课程学习及教学的改进。
本书的第1—3章由胡行翻译,第4—8章由贾瑜翻译,第9—12章由孙强翻译。书中对我国读者熟悉的外国人名将直接给出中译名,对某些不常见的外国人名将采取音译并给出英文名。原著者给出了很多有教益的脚注,为了使读者能够方便地查阅脚注所给出的参考文献,脚注中的人名、杂志名和出版社名将不再翻译,直接给出英文名。由于时间紧迫,加之译者水平有限,不妥或错误之处,敬请广大读者批评指正,以便再版时修正:
