近20年来高等医学院校都普遍重视对医学生的英语教学，特别是全国四、六级英语统考对大学生公共英语水平的提高起了良好的导向和激励作用，公共英语教学质量都有明显的提高。但也必须指出当前医学生，也包括研究生的医学专业英语水平还很不够，要适应21世纪的医学信息交流，没有扎实的医学专业英语基础是难以胜任的。近年在国际医学专业会议上个别中国专家因受到专业英语限制，影响了学术交流。现在培养的医学生应该是医学信息交流的能手，因此高等医学院校加强医学专业英语教学已迫在眉睫。

Introduction

本辞典于1997年5月出第l版，颇受读者欢迎，经多次印刷，7年后的2004年6月出第2版，现在又过8年，迎来了它的第3版。辞典收词的起点是排除大学四级考试要求掌握的4000词（即该4000最基本的词不收），在此基础上，主要收录常用的医学术语及少量医学文献中需要使用的普通词汇（包括名词、动词、形容词和个别副词）。收录的词条数量第l版约为3300个，第2版增加3700个，第3版又增加3000个，总共大约达到10000个，连同一般读者早巳掌握的大学英语4000个基础词汇，总数可达约14000个；这个词汇范围对阅读一般医学书刊比较实用。
医学科学在不断发展，新的医学术语也随之不断涌现。第3版在增加词条数量时，除继续丰富医学常用术语外，特别将重点放在近十年来出现的一些新术语上。在给术语词条选择例句时，也尽量选用那些反映医学较新进展内容的英语句例。这次的15位编委均系我校基础和临床各科的教授专家，为实现上述目的创造了有利条件。
这本辞典从l版到3版，规模从小型逐步过渡到中型。它的编写方式不同于一般辞典，其特点表现在每个词条后面除音标、词性和基本词义外，一般配有两个医学例句和中文翻译，通过词在句中的使用可以帮助读者更深刻地了解该词的词义，句子的语境可加深读者对该词的印象，从而更容易地记住该词。不少读者体会到仔细阅读词条例句对他们的英语写作有启发和借鉴作用，对照阅读例句的中译文对翻译也有一定体会。总之，词条下的例句不仅深化了词义的理解和掌握，而且还能使读者猎取语言学习多方面的收获。这或许是本词典为什么受到读者欢迎和多次印刷的原因所在。
附录部分也是本辞典的一大特色，具体内容这里不作赘述，请参看目录。其中有关英语医学术语的特征和拉丁语的点滴介绍，不仅扩展和丰富了读者关于英语词汇的理论知识，而且给读者在医学阅读中遇到的词语障碍提供了一些有益的帮助，希望能引起读者的重视，善于利用。
词典的编写是一项繁重而细致的工作，它需要内部团队的合作和集体智慧的凝聚，也需要外力的扶持。在我们过去的工作中，先后得到了学校一些领导部门的关心和支持。这次，我们要特别感谢华中科技大学科学技术开发院陈建国副院长给我们的关心和帮助。另外，我校教师管汉雄、曲宝丽、何平和谌丁艳参加了部分编写工作，严娇同学承担了书稿电脑录入及编排的部分工作任务，在此对他们表示衷心的感谢。尽管我们在编写过程中尽了最大努力，但疏漏和错误在所难免，恳请同行专家和读者不吝给予指正。
