戴维·A·沃尔夫（David A.Wolfe）

Book Abstract

在实验性研究中，研究者必须设法对被试的特征进行控制，因为被试的特征可能会减低研究结果的精确性。比如，如果两组被试在教育程度、智商、社会经济状况或有关障碍的表现方面有差异，那么就很难确定到底是自变量还是其他因素导致了结果。如果能随机地将被试安排到不同的治疗情境中-就能避免这一问题，因为被试到任何小组的机会均等。可以通过抛硬币的方法，根据硬币是“字”一面还是“图案”一面来进行被试分组，也可以通过随机数字表来分配被试，这样就可能使非自变量引起的效应在各治疗小组中得到平衡，而使自变量的效应突现出来。
正如我们已经提到的一样，异常儿童心理学中的很多假设都不可能通过随机分配被试或者操纵真实情境中的条件来进行检验。一种折中的方法就是采用自然实验法（natural experiment），也被称为准实验设计（quasi—experimental design）或者已知组比较（known—group comparison）。在自然实验中，试图比较的情境或治疗已经存在了。举例来说，要对受虐儿童和非受虐儿童进行比较，那么实验可能包括了不同障碍的儿童、有着不同问题的父母以及不同的家庭环境。这些研究本质上都是相关性研究，只是被试在选择上要确保除了自变量以外，其特征都要尽可能有可比性。尽管研究者对不同组别被试的平衡给予了特别的关注，但自然实验还是无法达到和真实验研究一样的精确水平和严格程度。但不管怎么说，对于异常儿童心理学研究中的很多重要问题而言，自然实验是唯一的选择。
前瞻性和回溯性研究设计
由于样本确定和资料收集的时间不同，有关儿童障碍的原因和长期后果的研究设计也会有所差异。在“回溯性研究设计”（retrospeetive design）中，样本是在当前时间确定的，收集的信息是更早以前的。确定的个案已经表现出了值得关注的结果，研究需要将他们与没有那些表现的控制组进行比较。研究者会将评估集中在过去的特征上，并对过去特征与当前结果之间的关系做出推论。比如，询问患有物质滥用障碍的年轻被试，请他们对自己早期的家庭经验进行回溯性等级评定和描述。

在“实时前瞻性研究设计”（real—time prospective design）中，先确定样本，然后会予以追踪，数据是在一个特定的时间段里收集的。为了了解发展的变化过程或者在重要的发展过渡期（比如进人中学或者青春期）里的差异性，需要在～段时间里追踪或者评估同一组被试。比如，追踪对新异刺激表现出恐惧的婴儿，将他们与那些没有恐惧感的婴儿比较，看他们日后是否会出现焦虑障碍或者其他问题。
前瞻性研究设计克服了回顾性研究设计中存在的许多问题。通过一段时间的样本追踪，我们可以确定哪些儿童出现了障碍，而哪些没有。因为收集的是当前发生的信息，所以由回忆偏差和歪曲引起的问题被最小化了。前瞻性设计的不足主要在于被试会随着时间而流失，数据收集的时间需要很久。

就整本书的内容来看，始终围绕这样四个“关系”——
第一，障碍与儿童的关系。作者强调“标签只对行为，而不对人”，强调描述异常行为的术语不能描述人，比如他们反对使用“迟滞儿童”或者“自闭症儿童”这样的表达，而替之以“有精神迟滞发展的儿童”或者“有自闭症的儿童”。“障碍”只是“儿童”的某种行为指代，是局部的、阶段性的、变化的，即使为了表达方便，也不能简单地概括为“某某障碍儿童”。
第二，障碍与能力的关系。作者指出，对异常的儿童行为的界定必须考虑儿童的能力（compe—tence），异常儿童心理学研究不仅要考虑儿童所表现出的适应不良行为，也要看到他们在多大程度上达到了正常的发展标准。本书在界定“异常”时，除了严格对照临床诊断标准外，更强调对“发展”的不利影响程度。或者说，作者认为“异常”的界定不仅仅由临床诊断标准给出，更重要的是要结合发展过程一并考虑。因此，在书中讨论各种障碍的章节里，作者都尽可能地把有关异常行为的信息与有关儿童能力、力量的成长性认识结合起来，将影响发展的风险因子与保护性因子结合起来，以一种“相对”发展的标准来界定“障碍”。
第三，障碍与发展的关系。为什么有相似早期经验的儿童在日后生活里并没有相似的问题出现？相反，为什么有同样障碍的儿童与青少年经常有非常不同的早期经验或者家庭特征？这是本书作者提出的两个重要问题，也是他们力图回答的。他们强调除了区分正常与异常以外，就儿童期障碍而言，还必须考虑“发展路径”，从动态的视角来理解“障碍”的本质与过程，不但要看障碍的“现在”，更要了解它的“过去”与“未来”。
