第1章先天性心脏病分类与命名
在本书的第2版中，我们强调上帝交给亚当的最早任务之一就是为动物取名。自然科学随之产生。对人群的研究及对个体间相似与差异的观察，使类群得以辨认。这些类群构成了分类法的基础。分类法确定后，即可进行命名。因此，命名的基本同的除了提供名称外，还包括辨别异同，并根据其重要性给予适当的地位。表而看来，毛虫（蝴蝶的幼虫）更像蜈蚣，却不像蝴蝶。但从分类学上讲，毛虫将变成蝴蝶，而蜈蚣却变不成蝴蝶的事实更为重要，所以将毛虫和蝴蝶归为一类。在先天性心脏病外科这样一门迅速发展的学科中，对问题轻重主次的强调会不可避免地发生变化。命名法亦需适应这种变化，尽管近年来不同学派达成了更多的共识。就此而言，胚胎学家认为很重要的问题，在外科医生看来可能无足轻重。如果二者都忽视对方的观点，就会不可避免地出现两种不同的命名法，使早已存在的交流障碍更加严重。幸好，本书第2版问世后的这段时期，大家对先天性心脏病的命名法可喜地达成了共识。

Introduction

我们2006年出版的专著《先天性心脏病外科学》第3版中文版即将付梓，欣然为序。
1974年朱晓东教授在我们伦敦奥蒙德大街儿童医院胸外科做访问学者吋，与本书主编之一（J.S）有过半年交往。朱教授是中国心脏外科的顶尖专家，他将《先天性心脏病外科学》第2版翻译成中文，并于1996年出版。得知此书深受中国心脏外科同行们的欢迎，我们由衷欣慰。如今，北京阜外医院的朱晓东大夫和马维国大夫承担了将此书第3版译成中文的艰巨任务，正是这种深厚友谊薪火相传的明证。对于翻译，马大夫非常勤勉，一丝不苟。我们每周都会通过电子邮件联系几次，澄清每章中的细节问题。
过去10年间，先天性心脏病的治疗在很多方面取得了长足发展。在新生儿期和婴儿早期进行的复杂畸形矫治手术逐渐增多；尽管心肺移植仍是严重先心病患儿的惟一有效治疗，但机械辅助循环已经成为终末期心肺衰竭的重要治疗措施；一些外科术式已被心脏介入技术所取代，而需要继续专业化治疗的成人先心病患者越来越多。凡此种种，在本书第3版中均有体现。
