有機化合物是與生命有關的物質

化學是物質的科學，包括有機化學、無機化學、物理化學、量子化學等領域。這些領域依照物質的種類來分類，即為有機化學與無機化學。處理有機化合物的是有機化學；處理無機化合物的是無機化學。

但什麼是有機化合物呢？有機化合物原本是指「與生命有關的物質」，構成這類物質的原子（元素）只有碳C、氫H、氧O、氮N等少數的原子。亦即，有機化學就是在處理這些原子所構成的物質。

有機化合物以外的物質都是無機化合物無機化合物又是什麼呢？無機化合物指的是「有機化合物以外的所有化合物」，所涉範圍很廣。無機化學涉及的元素不只有碳、氫，還涵蓋了所有元素。從原子序1的氫到原子序118的Uuo都屬於無機化學的研究範圍。無機化學的樂趣就藏在其中。

原子的形狀

物質與能量構成宇宙，而所有物質皆由原子組成。沒有人看過原子的形狀，人類今後大概也沒機會看到吧。不過，人們根據許多實驗結果，將原子想像成「球狀粒子」。這個球狀粒子是數個電子所構成的電子雲，而電子雲的中央則有一個極小的粒子─原子核。

原子的大小超乎想像原子的直徑大約是10-10m。若將原子放大成乒乓球的大小，再用同樣的比例將乒乓球放大，乒乓球會變成地球的大小喔。

位於原子中央的原子核直徑大約是原子的萬分之一。也就是說，如果把原子想成兩個直徑一百公尺的巨蛋球場所合成的巨大銅鑼燒，則原子核的大小即相當於一顆滾進投手丘、直徑一公分的彈珠。
