Introduction

作为一名职业设计师,我设计过自行车、医药设备、家具和雕塑,既有静止的,也有运动的。对于我来说,设计物品是一件容易的事。我有幸具备了一个成功的 设计师所必备的才能。不过在从事机械设计课程教学多年之后才认识到,我并不知道如何很好地把自己所知道的许多知识教给学生;我能够给学生展示好的设计和不 好的设计实例,能够告诉他们设计人员从事设计实践的历史,能够给学生提供有关设计概念的建议,但是不能告诉他们如何来解决一个设计问题。另外,在我和其他 从事机械设计教学同行的交谈中发现,这不仅是我一个人的感受。
这个情况使我回忆起一次滑冰的体验。作为一名新手,我能在冰面上站立、左摇右摆 前仰后合地向前滑动,而我的一位朋友(一位职业教师)却能很自如地向前或向后滑。当他还是一个小男孩时就会滑冰了,滑冰是他的第二天性。一天,当我们一起 滑冰时,我请他教我如何向后滑。他说这太容易了,让我看着他向后滑。可是当我试着照他那样做时,马上就摔倒了。他把我扶起来后,我请他教我正确的做法,而 不仅是只做给我看。他想了一会儿终于说到,他没法把这个技巧给我说清楚。我仍然没有学会向后滑,我料想他仍然说不清楚向后滑的技巧。我对朋友可以轻松后滑 而我却摔在冰上受挫的失望感觉,与我不能教学生如何正确地解决一个设计问题时产生的感觉是一样的。
这个经历和体会促使我去研究设计过程,并且最终写出本书。书中内容包括原创性的研究、对美国工业的研究、对外国设计技术的研究,以及来自设计课程的不同教学尝试。作为这些研究的成果,我得出四点有关机械设计的基本结论:
1 学习设计的唯一途径是去作设计。
2 在工程设计中,设计者用到三类知识:产生概念的知识、评价概念的知识和组织设计过程的知识。概念的产生来自于经验和天分;概念的评价,部分来自于经验,部 分来自于正规训练,这是多数工程教育的焦点。产生和评价概念的知识是专业领域知识形式。设计过程知识和决策大部分是与专业领域知识无关的。
3 如果有足够的产生概念的能力和经验,有足够的评价概念的经验和训练,是能学到高质量产品的设计过程的。
4 设计过程应该在两个方面学习:在学术环境中,同时在模拟工业实际的环境中。
现把这些观念收编到本书中,而且为使读者在能够学会设计过程的同时,还能够研发出一个产品,这些内容是这样安排的:在第1~3章中,对学习设计过程所需 要的机械设计背景和一些术语进行了定义,并且讨论了产品设计中的人为因素。第4~12章是本书的主体内容,它逐步地展示出设计方法的进程,引导读者实现由 一个设计问题到给出可用于制造和装配的解。这些材料以与求解一个确切问题的解无关的方式表示出来。论及的技术是在工业中应用的,它们的名称已经成为机械设 计中的通用词:质量功能配置、决策方法、并行工程、面向装配设计和稳健设计。这些技术在本书中全部放在一起。虽然它们作为一步一步的方法按次序安排在内容 中,但总的过程是高度地反复重叠的,每个步骤仅仅是需要应用时的一个引导。

大卫G 乌尔曼第4版增加的内容第4版增加的内容关于设计过程的知识正在迅速增加。在写第4版时的一个目标就是要将这些知识组合到一个统一的构架中去,这个构架也 是前3版的重点之一。整个新版的主题进行了一些更新,并与书中其他很好的实践举例综合在一起。新版中一些特殊的添加内容包括:1 改进了保证团队工作成功的材料。
2 20余个空白的表格可以通过本书的网站下载以供设计过程中使用。书中也包括许多填好的表格以便于学生参考。
3 改进了关于项目计划的资料。
4 改进了"为环境设计"和"为可持续性设计"的部分。
5 改进了作出决策部分的资料。
6 增加了基于矛盾产生概念的内容。
7 增加了一些来自工厂的新照片和图片用于书中的举例。
