文森特•N•帕里罗美国新泽西州威廉帕特森大学社会学教授，主要研究领域包括美国弱势群体、城市社会学、社会化问题、族群冲突等，著有《门卫》（Universe，2011）、《种族与族群关系研究》（Allyn & Bacon，2010）、《新时代的不确定性与不安全》（Calandra，2009）、《美国的多样性》（Paradigm Publishers，2013）等，学术论文屡见于《美国社会学评论》等杂志，曾任美国东部社会学会副主席，作为移民与族群冲突问题专家，常到中国及欧洲各国讲学。
姚伟（1973— ），男，四川资阳人，汉族，社会学博士，西南科技大学教授，著有《关系网络、制度结构与经济绩效——一项关于企业集群的经济社会学分析》（四川大学出版社，2009）、《社会风险不平等研究——关于马克思主义阶级理论的一种继承与发展》（中国社会科学出版社，2014）等，译有《资本主义文化与全球问题》（中国人民大学出版社，2013）等，发表各类学术论文近50篇。

一、为什么要研究城市？
当一说到城市时，我们大多数人都会同艾略特一样，对城市这种地方十分着迷——它充满了各种强烈刺激，极其神秘，各色人等千奇百怪。我们大多数人可能也都同诗人艾略特一样，认同城市是我们爱去做客和拜访的地方（伦敦就是艾略特爱去的地方）；但是，我们中的大多数人当然也不愿意长期生活在城市中。不过，到诸如纽约、多伦多、芝加哥或旧金山这样的大城市做客，仍是一件有意思和让人十分激动的事情。
当我们来到城市时，我们常常会看到一家接着一家的商店，卖着各种各样我们家里没有的东西。各种各样的人——老人与小孩、富人与穷人、时髦的新贵与失魂落魄者——都从我们身边走过，来来去去，川流不息。人们说，在大城市中，万事都有可能，一切皆会发生——他们不需要在城市待太长的时间，就会意识到他们确实是对的。
在整个北美，超过80% 的人都生活在城市地区，甚至更多的人都是围绕城市谋求自己的生活，建设自己的生活，度过自己的一生。我们生在城市（或城市附近），长在城市（或郊区），稍微大一点，就会到城市或城市郊区的大学读书（可能与家有一点距离），最终在某个城市或接近某个城市的地方成家立业。在整个北美，我们的很多娱乐爱好——包括参加各种俱乐部、音乐演唱会或观看体育比赛——都是以城市为基础的。我们也许还不得不承认：我们的民族主要由城市人口构成，在加拿大和美国，城市生活才是常态，才是最普遍的生活方式。因此，研究城市，也就是研究我们自己。
然而，与我们的个人经验所揭示的相比，城市显然有着更多的东西。城市本身就是一个动态的、充满各种活动的实体，它是人类历史中最有吸引力的一张名片。在1900 年，世界城市人口比重仅为9% ，但到1950 年已经上升到30% ，而到2009 年已经超过50% 。如果继续保持这一上升趋势，到2030 年，城市将成为地球上60% 的人的家园（UN Population Division 2012）。
因此，城市是所有各种人间“戏剧”的集合：受到最高水平教育的人与最粗鲁无知的人彼此冲撞，超乎想象的富有与最最悲惨的贫穷一同存在。在历史上，大多数迁移到城市的人，都试图实现过上更好生活的梦想，并且常常会梦想成真；但是，现在那些来到墨西哥城、里约热内卢、新德里以及东京等新兴的特大城市的追梦人，也会梦想成真吗？这些城市的人口正在以每年数百万的速度快速增加，以致其中很多人难以获得最基本的公共服务（水、住房和电等）。如果不尽快加以研究、检讨和解决，那么这种人口扩张将会加剧城市贫困，甚至导致史无前例的生态灾难。因此，研究城市，也就是研究一种独特而强大的人类居住方式：一种既可能满足又可能挫败人类所有需要的物理与社会环境。
本书的重要主题之一，就是指出城市并非完全可以自足自立的存在，它们是其所在的更大社会的不可分割的、无法逃脱的部分。数个世纪以来，城市已经成为各种文明的心脏和血液——经济、政治与文化的中心。在城市中，我们既可以看到整个人类的巨大成就，也可以看到人类的悲剧。例如，我们把希腊雅典、文艺复兴时期的佛罗伦萨和伊丽莎白女王一世时期的伦敦视为人类精神的伟大成就，而把古罗马、纳粹德国的柏林与人类的野蛮、丑陋联系在一起。在这两种情况中，都是某种文化背景塑造了城市的品格和特征：在公元前（Before Common Eraa）4 世纪，希腊雅典把人类成就提升到一个新高度，而一战后德国纳粹的出现，却导致柏林一度声名狼藉、臭名远扬。
在今天，城市与其文化环境的联系同样明显和密切。在美国的那些城市中，存在着使美国之所以伟大的文化：科技发达、政治自由和文化昌盛。当然，同样是那些城市，也体现了这个国家巨大的失败，包括令人难以忍受的贫穷和不时发生的暴力犯罪。那么，要研究城市，也就要检视城市得以存在其中的社会。特别是在今天全球经济一体化时代，经济的影响可能与文化的影响一样重要和巨大，因此我们也必须深入探讨全球化对城市的结构和命运的影响。
因此，我们要把握现代人类的存在状况，理解城市就显得十分关键。但是我们选择如何研究城市也十分重要。城市是一种复杂的实在，因此我们对于城市的研究很少会得到简单的结论。如果我们只看到城市生活的各种事实，那么我们会错失城市生活动态的、充满活力的灵魂，城市也将显得无趣、昏暗而死气沉沉——由水泥建筑、官僚机构（科层组织）、失业率构成的集合。但是，如果我们也问一些“怎么样”的问题——把这些事实性要素与人类生活联系起来——城市就立马鲜活起来，具有各种充满活力的重要力量。
那么，我们在研究城市时，就不能仅仅问“它是什么”，还必须如艾略特在他的诗中所建议的一样，“我们只管去做客”。我们的研究与探索，必须超越描述与统计，而去揭示城市生活那更广泛更深刻的实在。本书正是希望帮助人们这样来研究城市。
