不要仅仅依赖你在高中所学的经济学知识。如果你在高中阶段学过经济学课程，那么你一定了解有关供给与需求的知识，而这些知识正是老师在最初几周内要向你讲授的内容。不要因此而宽慰自己：经济学课程是一门简单的课程。你在高中所学到的有关经济学概念的知识会很有用，但这些知识还不足以保证你在考试中取得高分。你的大学老师要求你掌握有关概念方面更加详细的知识，并且要求你将这些知识运用于新的环境中。以每一周为基础，紧跟课程进度。在老师讲解之前。要预习课本中有关章节的内容。在初次阅读过程中，不要为你不太理解的细节或论点而担心——只要试着对基本概念和基本问题有大体理解就可以了。当你对课堂讲授内容进行预习后，你可能会惊喜地感受到老师教学能力的提高。老师一讲完某一章的内容，你就要完成《学习指南》中这一章的习题。千万不要在考试的前一天或前一周去死记硬背。但是，根据我所掌握的情况，那些在考前三天通过死记硬背突击学习的学生，其考试分数比普通学生要高，但前者的分类测试成绩较后者的要差，后者是那些在整个学期都一直坚持学习的学生。所以，不要掉入反复学习这一陷阱。做好听课笔记。好的课堂笔记对于有重点的学习是至关重要的。你的老师会讲解课本中大标题下某一小标题中的内容。你的老师在课堂上所讲解的大标题中的内容，是你在学习时需要重点掌握的。你也要重点掌握老师所讲解过的图表。
老师讲解的重点与课本中的重点会有所不同，所以，要早一点问清楚，在复习备考时，课堂笔记和教材哪个更重要。如果你的老师回答两者都重要，那么，你要问以下典型的经济问题：多花一小时复习课堂笔记和多花一小时复习课本，哪一个会更有利呢？这个问题的假设前提是：你已经把课本中每一章内容都阅读了两遍（在课前阅读一遍以求大致理解，在课后阅读一遍以求彻底理解）；你已经做好了一套完整的课堂笔记；还有，你已经将《学习指南》中各章的习题都做完了。在将这种分析方式用于有效分配你的学习时间这一问题中，你已经开始像一名经济学家那样思考了！
