《福尔摩斯探案全集（套装全8册）》的出版使福尔摩斯在英国读者中成为妇孺皆知的英雄，也使其作者柯南·道尔一举成名，后人更是称其为“侦探小说之父”。

Author Description

柯南·道尔，1859年生于苏格兰的爱丁堡，曾入爱丁堡大学医学院读书，获医学博士学位后便开了一家私人诊所。但柯南·道尔的诊所门可罗雀，收入仅能维持生活。于是，柯南·道尔便找到了第二职业——写作。
柯南·道尔在1886年写出第一部侦探小说《暗红色研究》，虽然投稿多家出版社，均被退了回来。后来总算有家沃德·洛克出版公司接纳，并于1887年出版，并付给柯南·道尔25英镑稿酬。
1890年，柯南·道尔出版了《四个人的签名》，这部小说一跑打响，向柯南·道尔约稿者纷至沓来。柯南·道尔于是便弃医从文，正式当上了专业作家。到了1894年底，柯南·道尔再也不为经济发愁，他决定让福尔摩斯在一次搏斗中坠入激流死去，让华生医生来结束《最后一案》这个故事。对于福尔摩斯之死。引起了广大读者强烈的不满，有人甚至表示愤怒，继而对柯南·道尔进行威胁与谩骂。广大公众不希望自己心目中的英雄死去，这简直成了文学史上的一个奇迹。柯南·道尔为此既震惊又兴奋，他意识到文学艺术原来具有如此大的震撼力，侦探小说已经被广大读者所接受。
这样，柯南·道尔在1901年又写出《巴斯克维尔的猎犬》。这部以福尔摩斯早期生活为题材的侦探小说，再次显示了柯南·道尔精娴高超的文学艺术水平，并再次获得巨大成功。出版商纷纷赶来约稿，使柯南·道尔搁笔不写侦探小说的决定产生了动摇。
1903年柯南·道尔写出了《空屋》，让福尔摩斯死而复活，再次活跃在读者面前。并先后写出了《归来记》、《恐惧之谷》、《最后致意》等侦探故事。
1928年至1929年，柯南·道尔创作的有关福尔摩斯故事分短篇与长篇两卷在英国出版，书名为《福尔摩斯探案全集》。这套书也由此而成为现代侦探小说经典之作。
1930年7月7日，柯南·道尔与世长辞，但他笔下的福尔摩斯却永远活在读者的心中。数以万计的读者到英国伦敦贝克街去寻访文学中的福尔摩斯，世界各国争相出版《福尔摩斯探案全集》，许多喜爱文学或爱看书的读者，谈起福尔摩斯，就像谈论自己的老朋友。福尔摩斯还从书中走上影视舞台，有关福尔摩斯的神奇故事影响了一代又一代人，至今依旧脍炙人口。
