列夫·托尔斯泰（Tolstoy，L.N.），1828-1910，俄国作家、思想家，19世纪末20世纪初最伟大的文学家，19世纪俄国伟大的批判现实主义作家，是世界文学史上最杰出的作家之一，他被称颂为具有“最清醒的现实主义”的“天才艺术家”。主要作品有长篇小说《战争与和平》《安娜·卡列尼娜》《复活》等，也创作了大量的童话，是大多数人所崇拜的对象。他的作品描写了俄国革命时的人民的顽强抗争，因此被称为“俄国十月革命的镜子”。列宁曾称赞他创作了世界文学中“第一流”的作品。

“是哪个女人？”
“您读一读信就知道了。是一个女犯人，政治犯。我在他们那里管事，所以她才托我办。尽管这种事是禁止的，但出于人道……”看守不自然地说。

薇拉·鲍戈杜霍芙斯卡娅以前是诺夫戈罗德省一个偏僻地方的女教师，涅赫留多夫曾经和自己的同伴们到这里猎过熊。这位女教师为了进高等女校读书，曾向涅赫留多夫要过一笔钱，涅赫留多夫给了她钱，以后就把她忘记了。而现在，这个小姐竟成了政治犯，被关在牢里。大概她在牢里听到了他的事，所以才提出要为他效劳。在那时，一切是多么轻松和简单，如今却变得如此困难和复杂，涅赫留多夫生动而愉快地回想起那个时候他同鲍戈杜霍芙斯卡娅认识的经过。那是在谢肉节之前，在离铁路大约六十俄里远的一个偏僻的地方。那次打猎的运气很好，打死了两头熊。他们吃完饭正准备回家，这时他们下榻的农舍的女主人走过来说，本地教堂助祭的女儿来了，想同涅赫留多夫公爵见一面。

“喂，别胡闹！”涅赫留多夫严肃地说，从桌旁站起来，擦擦嘴唇，感到奇怪：助祭的女儿为啥要找我呢。他来到女主人的农舍里。
屋里有一个姑娘，头戴毡帽，身穿短袄皮，青筋突现，瘦瘦的脸，不大好看。只有她那双眼睛和眼睛上边的眉毛长得很好。

“我……我……您知道吗，您有钱，您却把钱花在无谓的事情上，花在打猎上，我知道，”姑娘开口说，感到很难为情，“而我却只想做一件事——成为对人有益的人，可我什么也不会做，因为我什么也不懂。”
她的一对眼睛真诚而善良，她那既果断又胆怯的全部表情又是那么动人，本来就能设身处地地为人着想的涅赫留多夫，此时立刻理解了她的心情，很同情她。
“我能为您出点什么力呢？”
“我是一个女教师，可我想进高等女校读书，却又进不去。倒不是人家不许我进，人家是允许我去的，只是要有钱才行。您先借给我一笔钱，等我毕业后就还给您。我认为，有钱人去猎熊，给农民喝酒，这都不好。他们干吗不做点好事呢？我只需要八十卢布。不过，您若不愿意，我也不在乎。”她气冲冲地说。
“相反，我很感激您，您给了我机会……我现在就给您拿钱来。”涅赫留多夫说。
他走到外屋，看见他的同伴正在那里偷听他们说话。他没有理会同伴的玩笑，从钱包里取出钱便去送给她。
“请收下，请收下，不要谢。我应该感谢您才是。”
现在涅赫留多夫回想起这一切，感到十分愉快。他还愉快地想起当时他差一点同一个军官吵了起来，因为那军官想把这件事编成下流笑话。另一个同事则为他说话，后来他们俩便成了最好的朋友。他还想起那次打猎顺利而又快活。那天夜里回到火车站时也心情很好。双马雪橇一辆接着一辆，排成长串，静悄悄地在林间狭道上疾驰，两旁树木时高时矮，中间夹杂一些枞树，树枝上密密实实地压着大块大块的积雪。黑暗中，红光闪烁，有人点着一支气味清香的纸烟。围猎人奥西普在没膝深的雪地里，从这个雪橇跑到另一个雪橇，一边打点东西，一边讲到麋鹿，说它们现在正行走在深雪地里，啃白杨树皮。又讲到熊如何在密林的洞穴里睡觉，嘴里吐出的热气从洞口冒出来。
涅赫留多夫想起了这一切，尤其是想到当年自己身强力壮、无忧无虑的幸福心情。他那被皮上衣绷得紧紧的肺部，深深地呼吸着寒冷的空气。树枝上的积雪被车轭碰撞下来，撒在他的脸上。他身体暖和，脸上凉爽，心里没有挂虑，没有责难，没有恐惧，也没有欲望。那时是多么好啊！可现在呢，我的天呀，这一切是多么痛苦，多么艰难啊！
薇拉·叶弗列莫芙娜显然是个革命者，现在她正为革命事业坐牢。应当去见见她才对，尤其是因为她还答应帮忙出主意，改善玛斯洛娃的处境。

列夫·尼古拉耶维奇·托尔斯泰（1828-1910）是19世纪俄国文学泰斗。他的代表作《战争与和平》、《安娜·卡列尼娜》、《复活》等是世界上闻名遐迩的经典名著，它们很早就被介绍到中国来，在我国可谓是家喻户晓了。
《复活》写于1889-1899年，是托尔斯泰晚年的一部杰作，一部不朽的史诗。它通过对女主人公玛斯洛娃被涅赫留多夫公爵诱奸后沦为妓女及后来的一系列悲惨遭遇的故事，真实地再现了19世纪黑暗的沙皇俄国整个社会的各个方面，表现了作者对被侮辱被损害者的无限同情，对黑暗的沙皇专制进行了无情的讽刺和猛烈的抨击。
“复活”是全书的基本主旨。作者精心地描写了涅赫留多夫的精神复活过程，也描写了玛斯洛娃的精神复活过程，并预示了俄国通向复活的途径。
小说女主人公卡秋莎·玛斯洛娃是一个美丽、纯洁的姑娘，对生活和未来有过美好的憧憬。她是一个女农奴的私生女，不知道自己的父亲是谁，母亲在两个地主老姑娘家里干活。卡秋莎三岁时母亲死了，由两个老姑娘领回家里抚养，长大后她就有了半是侍女半是养女的身份。卡秋莎满十六岁那一年，两个老姑娘的侄子涅赫留多夫公爵（当时是一个大学生）来到姑母家度假，卡秋莎与涅赫留多夫很快相识并相爱了，不过当时的涅赫留多夫还是一个单纯、无邪的青年，并没有干出什么出格的事情。但三年后，当他大学毕业成为军官后，他就变成一个迷恋酒色、贪图享受、彻头彻尾的利己主义者了。这一年他再次来到姑妈家，在这里住了四天，在临走的前夜，他诱奸了卡秋莎。第二天他塞给卡秋莎一张一百卢布的钞票就走了。五个月之后卡秋莎才知道自己怀孕了。怀孕后她已无法再待在老姑娘家里，只好单身跑出来，先是在警察局长家做佣人，受到这个警察老流氓的调戏，后来到林务官家干活，又被林务官强暴；她处处被侮辱，不断被抛弃，最终沦为妓女。在七年被蹂躏、被践踏的妓女生活中，她只有用抽烟和酗酒来打发日子，身心已完全麻木了。最后，在一桩人命案中她被诬为杀人犯，被关进监狱，送上法庭。
