Author Description

陀思妥耶夫斯基（1821-1881），是19世纪俄国文坛上一颗璀璨的明星，是享有世界声誉的一位小说家，与列夫·托尔斯泰、屠格涅夫齐名，三人被称为俄罗斯文学的“三巨头”。他所走过的是一条极为艰辛与复杂的生活与创作道路，是俄国文学史上最复杂、最矛盾的作家之一。主要作品有《罪与罚》、《白痴》、《群魔》、《卡拉马佐夫兄弟》、《死屋手记》、《被侮辱与被损害的人》、《地下室手记》等。
臧仲伦，当代著名翻译家，江苏武进人。所译陀思妥耶夫斯基的作品尤多，如《罪与罚》、《白痴》、《群魔》、《卡拉马佐夫兄弟》、《死屋手记》、《被侮辱与被损害的人》、《地下室手记》等，其他译作有《驿站长》、《钦察大臣》、《塔拉斯·布尔巴》、《往事与随想》（与巴金舍译），以及列夫·托尔斯泰的中短篇杰作、亚·奥斯特洛夫斯基的名剧《大雷雨》、屠格涅夫的《文论》等，影响广远。

“且慢，诸位，我自己本来也想这样分析的。不瞒诸位，我甚至都害怕了。我刚才本来想大叫，鬼才知道一个人的愿望取决于什么，这大概得谢谢上帝，我想起了科学，可是……话到嘴边又咽了回去。而这时候你们就说起来了。要知道，说真格的，要是有朝一日人们果真能找到我们所有的愿望和恣意妄为的公式，也就是它们依据的公式究竟是根据哪些规律产生的，它们是怎么发展的，它们在如此这般的情况下追求的目标是什么，等等，等等，也就是说找到那个真正的数学公式--那，那到时候，这人大概也就会立刻停止愿望什么了，而且，也许，肯定不会再有什么愿望了。谁乐意根据对数表来愿望这愿望那呢？而且：他还会立刻从一个人变成管风琴中的一根琴销或者与此相类似的某种东西：因为一个人如果没有愿望，没有意志，那还算什么人呢？这不是跟管风琴中的琴销一样了吗？诸位高见？咱们来计算一下概率--这情形会不会发生呢？
“唔……”你们认定道，“由于我们对我们利益的错误看法，因此我们的愿望也大部分是错误的。因此，有时候我们情愿听一些纯粹的胡说八道，由于我们的愚蠢，我们在这胡说八道中居然看到达到某种预先设定的利益的最便捷的途径。嗯，当这一切都在纸上写清楚和计算清楚了（这是非常可能的，因为，如果预先就相信某些自然规律是人永远无法认识的，那岂不太可恨，也太没意思了吗），到那时候，当然，也就不会有所谓愿望了。要知道，假如什么时候愿望与理性完全串通好了，到那时候我们就只会发发议论，而不会想去做什么，因为不可能，比如说吧，一方面保持着理性，另一方面又想做一些毫无意义的事，这样岂不是明知故犯，置理性于不顾，希望自己坏吗……因为所有的愿望和所有的议论的确可能都已经计算好了，因为总有一天人们会发现我们的所谓自由意志的规律的，这样一来，不是开玩笑，还真可以建立一个类似于对数表的东西，因此我们还真可以按照这个表来表现自己的愿望。比如说吧，假如什么时候有人给我计算好了，并且向我证明，如果我向某某人做那个表示轻蔑的手势①，因为我不能不做，并且一定得用某个手指来这样做，那样我还有什么自由可言呢，尤其因为我还是个学者，还在某某大学毕过业？要知道，那样的话，我就能预先计算出我今后三十年的整个一生了；总之，如果真是这样，那我们岂不是无事可做了吗；反正好赖都得接受。再说我们还得不厌其烦地一再对自己说，肯定在某个时候和某某情况下，造化是不会征求我们的意见的；造化怎么安排，我们就得怎么接受，而不是我们怎么幻想，就怎么接受，如果我们果真想按照对数表和日程表办事，嗯……哪怕就按蒸馏甑办事呢，那有什么办法，那就只好接受蒸馏甑了！要不然，即使你们不同意，这蒸馏甑也会照样被接受……”
“是啊，您哪，但是，正是这点是我思想上的一大障碍！诸位，请你们原谅，我不着边际地净高谈阔论了；这是因为我四十年来一直住在地下室！请允许我发挥一下自己的幻想。你们瞧：诸位，理性的确是个好东西，这是无可争议的，但是理性不过是理性罢了，它只能满足人的理性思维能力，可是愿望却是整个生命的表现，即人的整个生命的表现，包括理性与一切搔耳挠腮。即使我们的生命在这一表现中常常显得很糟糕，但这毕竟是生命，而非仅仅是开的平方根。要知道，比如说，十分自然，我之所以要活下去，是为了满足我整个生命的官能，而不是仅仅为了满足我的理性思维能力，也就是说，理性思维能力只是我的整个生命官能的区区二十分之一。理性知道什么呢？理性仅仅知道它已经知道的东西（除此以外，大概它永远也不会知道别的了；这虽然不足以令人感到快慰，但是为什么不把它如实说出来呢？），可是人的天性却在整个地起作用，天性中所有的一切，有意识和无意识，哪怕它在胡作非为，但它毕竟活着。
