鸿钧既判，两仪遂分。大地之上，列为五洲；每洲之中，万国并立。五洲之说，古时虽未曾发明，然国度是一向有的。既有了国度，就有竞争。优胜劣败，取乱侮亡，自不必说。但是各国之人，苟能各认定其祖国，生为某国之人，即死为某国之鬼，任凭敌人如何强暴，如何笼络，我总不肯昧了良心，忘了根本，去媚外人。如此则虽敌人十二分强盛，总不能灭我之国。他若是一定要灭我之国，除非先将我国内之人，杀净杀绝，一个不留，他方才能够得我的一片绝无人烟的土地。
看官，莫笑我这一片是呆话，以为从来中外古今历史，总没有全国人死尽方才亡国的。不知不是这样讲，只要全国人都有志气，存了个必要如此，方肯亡国的心，他那国就不会亡了。纵使果然是如此亡法，将来历史上叙起这些话来，还有多少光荣呢！
看官，我并不是在这里说呆话，也不是要说激烈话。我是恼着我们中国人，没有血性的太多，往往把自己祖国的江山，甘心双手去奉与敌人。还要带了敌人去杀戮自己同国的人，非但绝无一点恻隐羞恶之心，而且还自以为荣耀。这种人的心肝，我实在不懂他是用什么材料造成的。所以我要将这些人的事迹，记些出来，也是借古鉴今的意思。看官们不嫌烦琐，容我一一叙来。
却说宋朝自从高宗南渡以来，偷安一隅。忘却徽、钦北狩之辱，还觍然面目，自信中兴。诛戮忠良，信任秦桧，所以南宋终于灭亡而不可救也。
高宗之后，六传而至度宗，其时辽也亡了，金也灭了，夏也绝了，只剩了蒙古一国，气焰方张，吞金灭夏，屡寇中华，既占尽了北方一带，又下了四川，困了襄阳，江、淮一带，绝无宁日。
原来蒙古的酋长，姓奇渥温。自从未宁宗开禧二年，他的什么“太祖法天启运圣武皇帝”，名叫“铁木真”的，称了帝号。看官，须知蒙古本是游牧之国，铁木真虽是称了帝号，那时他还不知道这个“帝”字是怎么样写法，所以他虽建了许多什么九旗呀、八旗的。在那鄂诺河地方，即皇帝位。群臣却还是叫他“成吉思”。这“成吉思”三个字，在蒙古话里就是“皇帝”了。
他的称帝，虽是看着中国的样，却连年号也不懂得建一个。后来慢慢的有那些全无心肝的中国人，投降过去，在他那边做了官，食了俸，便以为受恩深重了。拿着“尽忠报国”四个字。不在中国施展，却施展到要吞灭中国的蒙古国去了。所以蒙古人也慢慢的吸收了许多中国文明。到了第四传，他的什么“世祖圣德神功文武皇帝”，名叫“忽必烈”的，才晓得建个年号。
这一年——宋度宗咸淳七年，还是蒙古忽必烈的至元八年，方才去了“蒙古”两个字，改一个国号，叫做“元”。他何以不知“名从主人”之义，舍去自己“蒙古”二字，改一个“元”字呢？只因他手下有一位光禄大夫太保参预中书省事，姓刘，名秉忠，表字仲晦的。这一位宝货，本来是大中华国瑞州人氏，却自从先世，即投入西辽，做了西辽的大官，成了一家著名的官族。他的祖父，却又投入了金朝，去做金朝的官。到了这位宝货，才投降蒙古，又去做蒙古的官。
这一大他忽地生了一个“尽忠报国”的心，特地上了一封章奏，说什么“陛下欲图一统中原，必要行中原的政事，一切典章礼乐制度，皆当取法于中国之尧、舜。中国自唐、虞以来，历代都有朝代之号。今陛下神圣文武，所向无敌，将来一定要入主中原，不如先取定一个朝号。据中国‘易经’、乾元之义：乾，乃君象，元，首也。故取朝号，当取一个‘元’字”云云。
忽必烈览奏大喜，即刻降旨，定了这个“元”字，从此“蒙古”就叫做“元”了。
忽必烈（以后省称元主）又特降一旨，叫刘秉忠索性定了一切制度。秉忠正要显他的才干学问，巴不得一声奉了旨意，定了好些礼乐、祭祀、舆服、仪卫、官制等条例，又定了许多“开府仪同三司”、“仪同三司”、“金紫光禄大夫”、“银青荣禄大夫”、“龙虎卫上将军”、“金吾卫上将军”、“奉国上将军”、“昭勇大将军”等名目，元主一一准从。又降旨叫他起造宫殿。秉忠也乐得从事。于是大兴土木，即在燕京起造。
也不知费了多少年月，耗了多少钱财，方才一一造成。各处题了名字：改“燕京”做“中都”，后来又改为“大都”。官殿落成之后，元主就喜滋滋的，叫钦象大夫，拣了黄道吉日，登殿受贺。到了这日，自是另有一番气象。但是庭燎光中，御炉香里，百官济济跄跄，好像是汉官威仪，却还带着好些腥膻骚臭牛奶酪酥的气味；雕梁画栋，螭陛龙坳，好像是唐官汉阙，却还带着许多骑骆驼，支布幔，拔下解手刀割吃熟牛肉的神情。
闲话少提。却说元主登殿受贺之际，享尽了皇帝之福，觉得这个滋味很好，不由的越发动了他吞并的心，遂又降下旨意，一面差官去安抚四川、嘉定一带；一面差官去催襄阳一路，务须速速攻下，不得有违。又指拨了两路兵，去攻掠江、淮一带地方。众官奉旨，都是兴兴头头的分头办去。
只有宋朝这位度宗皇帝，还是一味的荒淫酒色，拱手权奸。只看得一座吴山，一个西湖，便是“洞天福地”。外边的军务吃紧，今日失一邑，明日失一州，一概不闻不问。宫里面任用一个总管太监，叫做巫忠；外面任用一个宰相，叫做贾似道。
这贾似道，本来是理宗皇帝贾贵妃的兄弟。贾贵妃当时甚是得宠，乘便在理宗跟前代自己兄弟乞恩。理宗遂将他放了一个籍田令，后来慢慢的又做了两任京、湖南北、四川宣抚使，又放过一回蒙古议和大臣，回来就授了知枢密院事，居然是一位宰相了。说也奇怪，那些投降到外国的中国人，反有那“尽忠报国”的心；倒是处在自己本国的中国人，非但没有“尽忠报国”的心，反有了一种“卖国求荣”的心。真是叫人无可奈何了！
贾似道这厮，出使过一回蒙古之后，不知他受了蒙古人多少贿赂，要卖掉中国江山。那时我并未跟着他去做他的账房，此时不便造他谣言，所以不曾知道他的细数。但是他自从回国之后，即在临安城外，葛岭地方，购了几百亩地，在那里起造花园，作为别院。就花园里面，起一间半闲堂，叫了捏像的匠人来，将他自己的像捏塑了一个，就同他自己一般大小，手脚都用机关装成，举得起，放得下，以便冬春夏秋的同它换衣服。这偶像就供在半闲堂中，叫些歌姬，终日轮着班，对着这偶像弹丝品竹。他自己一个人享用得不够，还要弄一个偶像来代他，这岂不是异想天开到极处了么！他又欢喜金玉古董玩物，所以又在园里盖造一间多宝阁，将贿赂所得的古董东西，都罗列在阁上。天天到阁上去抚摩玩弄一回，风雨无阻。这就是他的日行公事了。

《痛史》的作者吴趼人（1866一1910），原名沃尧，字小允，又字茧人，佛山人，是晚清著名的文学家，在诗、文、小说、戏剧、小说理论等方面均有建树，尤以小说成就最高。他著述宏富，有长篇小说作品十九种，代表作为《二十年目睹之怪现状》、《痛史》、《九命奇冤》与《恨海》等。另有短篇小说十二种，文言笔记小说五种，笑话三种，以及一些戏曲、诗歌、杂著等。

《痛史》成功地刻画了卖国贼贾似道的形象。他原是一个纨绔子弟，只因姐姐贾妃受宠，才得以重用。理宗时他督师援鄂，暗里实际屈膝求和，回朝却要冒功领赏。襄樊长期被围，他不但隐匿不报，而且设计害死通报皇帝的胡妃。当元军顺江东下、南宋危在旦夕、群臣力主出兵时，他竟以筹划为名设立都督府，大肆侵吞钱粮。他既是权力台上的阴谋家，又是风月场中的浪荡鬼。在其堪与皇宫媲美的半闲堂里，不仅藏有四处搜寻来的良家美女，而且还有尼姑、道姑、妓女，即使是皇帝的宫女他也敢攫取。至于他彩舫游湖、醉心蟋蟀、掘墓取宝、滥杀无辜等就不一而足了。贾似道主政的十五年，就是最后葬送南宋的十五年。小说对贾似道的叛卖行为、鬼蜮伎俩、奢靡生活作了全方位、多角度的揭露和抨击，刻画出中国历史上一个极端腐败的典型人物，显示出权奸害国的历史教训。
宋朝的最高统治者极度荒淫，将朝政完全托付奸臣贾似道，躲在深宫纵情淫乐，连襄樊被元军围困多年的军国大事，也毫不知晓。腐败必亡，这正是《痛史》所要表达的深刻主题。
《痛史》忠于史实，兼采讲史与侠义小说之长，感情充沛，笔墨酣恣，凛凛有生气。小说以历史为题材，深入历史，提炼历史主题，揭示历史规律；在不改变宏观的历史框架的前提下，又对历史事件的细节、历史人物的心理，乃至次要人物、一般事件，展开合理想象虚构、扩展延伸，还吸收稗官野史、民间传说等丰富了艺术内容。从这个角度进行考察，《痛史》无疑是一部成功的历史小说。
《于少保萃忠全传》又称《大明忠肃于公太保演义传》、《旌功萃忠录》，明代长篇历史演义小说，共十卷，四十传，一传相当于一个回目。小说的作者孙高亮，字怀石，钱塘（今浙江杭州）人，大约生活在明万历初年前后，生平不详。
《于少保萃忠全传》的主人公是明代的民族英雄于谦。于谦（1398一1457），字廷益，号节庵，钱塘（今浙江杭州）人。明正统十四年（1449），发生了土木堡之变。明英宗在土木堡与瓦刺交战，兵败被俘，瓦刺大军直逼北京城下。时任兵部左侍郎的于谦力挽狂澜，与诸大臣拥立景泰帝即位，并成功组织了北京保卫战，大败瓦刺军，迫使瓦刺放了明英宗。战后，于谦因功被加封为少保。明英宗复辟后，以“谋逆”罪将于谦冤杀。后人将于谦与岳飞、张煌言并称“西湖三杰”。
《于少保萃忠全传》以于谦一生的经历为主线，从于谦出生写起，写他幼年时代的聪慧，青年时代的抱负与交游，进入仕途之后的刚正清廉，国家危亡时的力挽狂澜，直到他含冤而死以及死后冤案的平反昭雪。小说作者怀着崇敬的心情，饱含感情地塑造了于谦这一爱国恤民、胆识超群的英雄人物。刚正不阿是他突出的性格特点。他在少年时代就聪颖过人，为官后，清廉正直，敢作敢为。在土木之变、英宗被俘的关键时刻，他“以社稷为重”，冒着“另立新君”的罪名，敢于承担起挽救国家的重任，后来英宗发动“夺门之变”，实行复辟后，却以“大逆不道，迎立外藩”的罪名将其杀害。小说不仅通过于谦在土木之变等重大事件中的表现来刻画人物，而且通过他救济灾民、公正断案、生活清苦等方面，展示他的性格，也描绘出明永乐至成化年间的历史演变和百态众生图。
《于少保萃忠全传》比较强调以史为据，多参照正史体系和范式来写作，比较强调“信”以达到“雅俗”的目的，在创作上体现了对史实的尊重。小说的一些重要事件和主要人物的经历都采纳了《明史稿》、《明宣宗实录》、《明英宗实录》等史书以及部分地方志中的相关材料，尤其是于谦领命巡抚河南、山西以后的情节大多有据可查，与史实相差不远，故而小说首先给人以历史真实感，整体风格较为严肃、凝重。比如，第十五传中描写于谦扶掖朝纲与国家危急存亡中指挥镇定、安排有当。以武士金爪杀王振爪牙与朝堂之上，推铖王上位，王尚心疑未坐，于谦复上前扶掖请王端坐。王方坐定，于谦大声言日：“众官今日虽为忠义激发，然在朝廷上，岂宜如此喧乱？马顺奸臣误国，打死勿论！”随安排边防守卫谋划定国安邦之计。此时的景泰帝已丝毫没有主见和王者风范，一切都由于谦安排妥当。“于公从五鼓进朝，直至一鼓方出。左右见公袍袖，皆星星碎落。”于是乎，一个勤勤恳恳于国家存亡之秋临危受命的宰相形象跃然纸上。
但是，《于少保萃忠全传》过于注重史实，这也在一定程度上削弱了作品的艺术魅力，长篇累牍的引用使作品显得冗长拖沓，亦容易让人产生厌烦感，因而限制了该作品的流传广度与深度。
此次再版，我们对原书中的笔误、缺漏和难解字词进行了更正、校勘和释义，对原书原来缺字的地方用口表示了出来，以方便读者阅读。由于时间仓促，水平有限，其中难免有所疏失，望专家和读者予以指正。
