《水浒传》是一部长篇英雄传奇，是中国古代长篇小说的代表作之一，是以宋江起义故事为线索创作出来的。宋江起义发生在北宋徽宗时期，《宋史》的《徽宗本纪》、《侯蒙传》、《张叔夜传》等都有记载。从南宋起，宋江起义的故事就在民间流传，《醉翁谈录》记载了一些独立的有关水浒英雄的传说，《大宋宣和遗事》把许多水浒故事联缀起来，和长篇小说已经很接近。元代出现了不少水浒戏，一批梁山英雄作为舞台形象出现。《水浒传》是宋江起义故事在民间长期流传基础上产生出来的，吸收了民间文学的营养。《水浒传》是我国人民喜爱的古典长篇白话小说之一。它产生于明代，是在宋、元以来有关水浒的故事、话本、戏曲的基础上，由作者加工整理、创作而成的。全书以宋江领导的农民起义为主要题材，艺术地再现了中国古代人民反抗压迫、英勇斗争的悲壮画卷。作品充分暴露了封建统治阶级的腐朽和残暴，揭露了当时尖锐对立的社会矛盾和“官逼民反”的残酷现实，成功地塑造了鲁智深、李逵、武松、林冲、阮小七等一批英雄人物。小说故事情节曲折，语言生动，人物性格鲜明，具有高度的艺术成就。但作品歌颂、美化宋江，鼓吹“忠义”和“替天行道”，表现出严重的思想局限。

《水浒传（套装上下册）》：
这些水浒戏，在水浒故事的流传中，首先是扩大了描写对象，除话本中出现的杨志、武松、鲁智深，《大宋宣和遗事》中描写的宋江、晁盖外，还将李逵、花荣、李应、卢俊义、王矮虎、燕青等作为主角来写。第二是人物姓名绰号更接近后来的《水浒传》。第三是稳定了以前的一些说法和描写，如“聚三十六大伙，七十二小伙”、“寨名水浒，？白号梁山”、晁盖中箭身亡等。这些对《水浒传》的创作，都起了推动作用。
《水浒传》的内容极为矛盾复杂，从它的结构可分为两大段。前七十回是第一大段。这一段主要写了两方面的内容，即抨击统治阶级的腐朽残忍和歌颂起义英雄的反抗行动。书中首先出场的高俅，本是浮浪破落户子弟，只因踢得一脚好气球，被昏君抬举做了殿帅府太尉职事。王进母子夜奔，林冲夫妇死别，杨志怀才流落，都是由于他的迫害。这样的开头，确如金圣叹所评的那样，是为揭示“乱自上作”。在高俅周围，形成了一个封建关系网：高衙内是他的螟蛉之子，高唐州知府高廉是他的叔伯兄弟，蔡京、童贯是他的朋党，江州知府蔡得章是蔡京的儿子，北京留守梁世杰是蔡京的女婿，华州贺太守是蔡京的门人。在他们下面，则是一些贪官污吏、土豪恶霸，从上到下，狼狈为奸，残害忠良，欺压良善，对人民进行残酷的剥削和压迫，反映了阶级之间的尖锐矛盾。有压迫就有反抗。作者用大量篇幅从正面描写并歌颂了反抗英雄。起先是个人的反抗，如鲁达、林冲的反抗。接着便是集体反抗，如智取生辰纲、江州劫法场。由攻打地主武装到抗击朝廷大军，如三打祝家庄、大破连环马。梁山泊招兵买马，屯粮造船，成立了政权，提出了“八方共域，异姓一家”，不管什么出身“都一般儿哥弟称呼，不分贵贱”的政治主张，反对封建社会的阶级剥削和政治压迫，反映了广大受压迫人民的愿望。七十一回以后，写受招安、征辽、征方腊，是另一大段。前半写人民反官府，是反映阶级矛盾的；后半写忠臣反奸臣，则反映统治阶级内部矛盾。宋江被招安以后，水浒英雄始终受奸臣排挤、打击和陷害，最后宋江等被奸臣害死。这样的悲剧结局，指出了统治者与被统治者、忠与奸的矛盾的不可调和性，揭示了农民起义的一般归宿，指出了农民阶级的局限性。这实际上寄托了作者深沉的感慨、对历史的深刻的思索。总之，《水浒传》作者以其高度的艺术表现力，生动丰富的文学语言，叙述了许多引入入胜的故事，塑造了众多可爱的个性鲜明的英雄形象。后世的农民起义军从中受到鼓舞，文学艺术作品得到了丰富题材和艺术启迪。
