Book Abstract

“我把草筐和手巾丢了，吃了饭，你得和我拿去，要不爹要骂我哩！”
原生答应了。原生从此就成了人民解放军的战士，背着这支枪打仗，后来也许换成“三八”，现在也许换成“美国自动步”了。
小五是原生的媳妇。这是原生的爹那年在船上，夜里推牌九，一副天罡赢来的，比原生大好几岁，现在二十了。
那时候当兵，还没有拖尾巴这个丢人的名词，原生去当兵，谁也不觉得怎样，就是那登上自家的渡船，同伙伴们开走的时候，原生也不过望着那抱着小弟弟站在堤岸柳树下面的秀梅和一群男女孩子们，嘻嘻笑了一阵，就算完事。
这不像是离别，又不像是欢送。从这开始，这个十五岁的青年人，就在平原上夜晚行军，黎明作战；在阜平大黑山下砂石滩上艰苦练兵，在盂平听那滹沱河清冷的急促的号叫；在五台雪夜的山林放哨；在黄昏的塞外，迎着晚风歌唱了。
他那个卡枪的伙伴秀梅，也真的在村里当了干部。村里参军的青年很多，她差不多忘记了那个小小的原生。战争，时间过得多快，每个人要想的、要做的，又是多么丰富啊！
可是原生那个媳妇渐渐不安静起来。先是常常和婆婆吵架，后来就是长期住娘家，后来竟是秋麦也不来。
来了，就找气生。婆婆是个老好子人，先是觉得儿子不在家，害怕媳妇抱屈，处处将就，哄一阵，说一阵，解劝一阵；后来看着怎么也不行，就说：
“人家在外头的多着呢，就没见过你这么背晦的！”
“背晦，人家都有个家来，有个信来。”媳妇的眼皮和脸上的肉越发耷拉下来。这个媳妇并不胖，可是，就是在她高兴的时候，她的眼皮和脸上的肉也是松卷地耷拉着。
“他没有信来，是离家远的过。”婆婆说。
“叫人等着也得有个头呀！”媳妇一转脸就出去了。
婆婆生了气，大声喊：
“你说，你说，什么是头呀？”
从这以后，媳妇就更明目张胆起来，她来了，不大在家里待，好在街上去坐，半天半天的，人家纺线，她站在一边闲磕牙。有些勤谨的人说她：“你坐的落意呀？”她就说：“做着活有什么心花呀？谁能像你们呀！”等婆婆推好碾子，做熟了饭，她来到家里，掀锅就盛。还常说落后话，人家问她：“村里抗日的多着呢，也不是你独一份呀，谁也不做活，看你那汉子在前方吃什么穿什么呀？”她就说：“没吃没穿才好呢。”
公公耍了半辈子落道，弄了一辈子船，是个有头有脸好面子的人，看看儿媳越来越不像话，就和老婆子闹，老婆子就气得骂自己的儿子。那几年，近处还有战争，她常常半夜半夜坐在房沿上，望着满天的星星，听那隆隆的炮响，这样一来，就好像看见儿子的面，和儿子说了话，心里也痛快一些了。并且狠狠地叨念：怎么你就不回来，带着那大炮，冲着这刁婆，狠狠地轰两下子呢？
小五的落后，在村里造成了很坏的影响，一些老太太们看见她这个样子，就不愿叫儿子去当兵，说：“儿子走了不要紧，留下这样娘娘咱搪不开。”
秀梅在村里当干部，有一天，人们找了她来。正是夏天，一群妇女在一家梢门洞里做活。小五刚从娘家回来，穿一身鲜鲜亮亮的衣裳，站在一边摇着扇子，一见秀梅过来，她那眼皮和脸皮，像玩独角戏一样，瓜搭就落下来，扭过脸去。
