《警世通言》话本小说集。明末冯梦龙著。与其另两部话本小说集《喻世明言》《醒世恒言》，合称“三言”。冯梦龙，字犹龙，长洲(今江苏昊县)人。《警世通言》所收作品题材广泛，内容丰富。一些历史上著名人物，如李白、苏东坡、唐伯虎，经过话本的描述，变得栩栩如生，给读者留下难忘的印象。爱情婚姻一类题材在《6元本中华国学百部-警世通言》中占了较大比重，编著者强调男女之间的真挚感情，主张婚姻自主，提倡男女双方互相尊重，对受压迫的妇女寄予了极大的同情，如社十娘、玉堂春等。更有不少作品描写了市井之民的生活，可以说是包罗万象、雅俗共赏。

俞伯牙摔琴谢知音
浪说曾分鲍叔金，谁人辨得伯牙琴？于今交道奸如鬼，湖海空悬一片心。
古来论交情至厚，莫如管鲍。管是管夷吾，鲍是鲍叔牙。他两个同为商贾，得利均分。时管夷吾多取其利，叔牙不以为贪，知其贫也。后来管夷吾被囚，叔牙脱之，荐为齐相。这样朋友才是个真正相知。这相知有几样名色？恩德相结者，谓之知己；腹心相照者，谓之知心；声气相求者，谓之知音。总来叫做相知。今日听在下说一桩俞伯牙的故事。列位看官们，要听者，洗耳而听；不要听者，各随尊便。正是：
知音说与知音听，不是知音不与谈。
话说春秋战国时，有一名公姓俞名瑞，字伯牙，楚国郢都人氏，即今湖广荆州府之地也。那俞伯牙身虽楚人，官星却落于晋国，仕至上大夫之位，因奉晋主之命，来楚国修聘。伯牙讨这个差使，一来是个大才，不辱君命；二来就便省视乡里，一举两得。当时从陆路至于郢都，朝见了楚王，致了晋主之命。楚王设宴款待，十分相敬。那郢都乃是桑梓之地，少不得去看一看坟墓，会一会亲友。然虽如此，各事其主，君命在身，不敢迟留。公事已毕，拜辞楚王。楚王赠以黄金彩缎、高车驷马。伯牙离楚一十二年，思想故国江山之胜，欲得恣情观览，要打从水路大宽转而回，乃假奏楚王道：“臣不幸有犬马之疾，不胜车马驰骤，乞假臣舟楫，以便医药。”楚王准奏，命水师拨大船二只，一正一副。正船单坐晋国来使，副船安顿仆从行李，都是兰桡画桨，锦帐高帆，甚是齐整。群臣直送至江头而别。
只因览胜探奇，不顾山遥水远。

Introduction

中国古典文学发展到明代，市俗文学兴起，在白话小说的基础上，明人又搜集整理和拟作了不少的“话本”。所谓“话本”，即说书艺人使用的一种底本，是以俚语记述市民生活的一种文学形式，不少人称之为俗文学。在这些话本中，以冯梦龙所编选的“三言”为最。
冯梦龙(1574一1646)，字犹龙，号墨憨斋主人，长洲(苏州)人。冯梦龙出身于书香门第，自幼受儒学熏陶，并深受袁宏道推崇民间文学的影响，逐渐成为晚明主情、尚真、适俗文学思潮的代表人物和通俗文学的一代大家。天启年间，冯梦龙先后编选“三言”，为话本小说提供了一个集大成的选本。
“三言”是《喻世明言》、《警世通言》、《醒世恒言》三部小说集的总称，每集40篇，共120篇，包容了汇辑的旧本和创作的新著，标志着我国白话短篇小说在说唱艺术的基础上，从文人的整理加工到文人独立创作的开始。它“极摹人情世态之歧，备写悲欢离合之致”，是数百年小说创作的一个结晶，也是旧时市民文化心理的积淀，由北宋到明万历朝，时间绵延约700年。这120篇短篇以短小精悍、通俗幽默的底色历述了世俗的人情百态，再现了旧社会的种种生活场景，勾勒出了一幅幅精彩真实的市民社会风情画。
“三言”中所体现的思想是平民化、市民化的，其中商人成为了时代的宠儿，它打破了传统观念歧视商业的思想，而把商人作为正面主人公频频亮相，如《徐老仆义愤成家》、《卖油郎独占花魁》，都是将小商小贩作为主角来加以塑造、歌颂。明中后期，商贾在百姓心目中地位的提高，在“三言”中得到很好的体现。
另外，歌颂婚恋自主、宣扬男女平等的作品仍在“三言”中占最大比重，如《崔待诏生死冤家》、《闹樊楼多情周胜仙》、《杜十娘怒沉百宝箱》、《玉堂春落难逢夫》，诸如此类的爱情婚姻故事，或哀艳动人，或曲折入胜，在人类的自然需求欲望上，作品反映出平民的健全理智和常人之情，尊重女性的意识得到提升。除此之外，其中的一些篇章抨击了贪官酷吏的凶残暴虐，赞扬了清官的廉政爱民，如《张廷秀逃生救父》、《乔太守乱点鸳鸯谱》等。
当然“三言”中也有糟粕的东西，比如过多的封建道德说教，宣扬因果报应等。虽然如此，作为市民文学代表作的“三言”，仍不失为一组优秀的白话小说集，广大读者开读“三言”尽可从中汲取有益的营养。
《警世通言》是“三言”中的第二本，刊刻于天启四年(1624)，内中多辑录改编了宋元时代的话本。所谓通言，即是适于民俗者。
我们在校刊时，尽量遵循原著，只对其中明显的讹误慎加改正，以便广大读者更好地欣赏这一古典名著。
