《钟鼓楼（茅奖书系）》描绘的是二十世纪八十年代初北京市民的生活。小说以薛家的婚礼为主要线索，讲述了北京一座九户人家的四合院居民，在十二个小时里发生的故事。小说对许多人和事作了纵向的历史回顾，反映了近四十个人物的经历、命运、心态和他们在平常生活中遇到的各自困惑，从而勾勒出一幅纵横交错的北京市民社会生活生态景观图。纷繁的人物与情节，丰富的人文地理、市井民俗风貌，令人耳目一新。

刘心武（1942～）四川成都人。1977年开始发表作品。1979年加入中国作家协会。著有短篇小说《班主任》《我爱每一片绿叶》《黑墙》、《白牙》等，中篇小说《如意》《立体交叉桥》《小墩子》等，长篇小说《钟鼓楼》《四牌楼》《栖凤楼》《风过耳》等，纪实作品《5·19长镜头》、《公共汽车咏叹调》。《钟鼓楼》获第二届茅盾文学奖，。若干作品被译为法、日、英、德、俄、意、韩、瑞典、捷克、希伯来等文字在境外发表、出版。

天上密布的紫云裂开一道缝隙，二束蛋青色的月光泻向地面。

贝子府渐渐现出了它的轮廓。北城的所所房屋渐渐显出了它们的轮廓。

高耸在北城正北端的钟楼和鼓楼，也渐渐显出了它们那雄伟的轮廓。

鼓楼——又称谯楼——上，传来交更的阵阵鼓声，打破了这夜空的寂寥。一群流萤从鼓楼的墙体下飞过。这似乎是一个普普通通的夜晚。同它的前一夜一样，并且同它的后一夜也将大同小异。天光渐渐放亮。

随着天色由晶黄转为银蓝，沉睡了一夜的城市苏醒过来。鼓楼前的大街上店铺林立，各种招幌以独特的样式和泼辣的色彩，在微风中摆动着；骡拉的轿车交错而过，包着铁皮的车轱辘在石板地上轧出刺耳的声响；卖茶汤、豆腐脑、烤白薯的挑贩早已出动自不必说，就是修理匠们，也开始沿着街巷吆喝：“箍桶来！”“收拾锡拉家伙！”……卖花的妇女走人胡同，娇声娇气地叫卖：“芍药花——拣样挑！”故意在鼻子上涂上白粉的“小什不闲”乞丐，打着小钹，伶牙俐齿地挨门乞讨……而最古怪的是卖鼠夹鼠药的小贩，一般是两人前后同行，手里举着一面方形白纸旗，上头画着老鼠窃食图，前头一位用沙哑的声音吆喝：“耗子夹子——夹耗子！”后头一位用粗嗄的声音相呼应：“耗子药！花钱不多，一治一窝！”……钟鼓楼西南不远，是有名的什刹海。所谓“海”，其实就是浅水湖，一半种着荷花，一半辟为稻田。据说因为沿“海”有许多寺庙庵堂，所以得“什刹海”之名。“什刹海”又分前海和后海，二“海”之间，有一石砌小桥，因形得名，人称银锭桥。银锭桥畔，有一小户人家，专卖豆汁。豆汁并非豆浆。将绿豆用水浸发后，磨成原汁，使之发酵，分解出可供制作粉丝的淀粉后，再滤出“黑粉子”和“麻豆腐”，最后所剩的一种味道酸涩的浊液，便是豆汁——未学会饮用者，特别是南方迁入北京的居民，往往仅啜一口便不禁作呕，然而老北京们却视它为最价廉物美的热饮，许多人简直是嗜之入迷。百年后的今天，北京仍有不少人酷爱此物，甚至有那漂洋过海侨居国外多年的北京人，虽然早已遍尝世上各种美味佳肴，但一旦回到北京，提出的首批愿望之一，便是：“真想马上喝到一碗热豆汁！”话说当年银锭桥畔那家小铺，所卖豆汁极有口碑。经营者为一对年过半百的老实夫妇，他们的豆汁发得好、漂得净、质量醇正，而且经营有方，为顾客们想得极为周到。有那家道已然没落的旗人老太太，为了节省几个铜板，到了店铺并不买那热好的熟豆汁，而是买下生豆汁，用陶钵装回家再热熟了吃。店主夫妇对她们也一视同仁，笑脸相迎，毫不怠慢。北京人喝热豆汁时，讲究吃这么几种东西：咸菜、焦圈、烧饼。这家店铺的咸菜颜色正、模样俊、味道香，咸菜丝有辣的、不辣的、宽条的、窄条的几种，而且还供应用苤蓝切成的骰子块，浇上辣椒油，夏天更用冰镇，随要随取，真是粗菜细做了。那焦圈炸得不温不火，金红脆薄，夹在层次分明、芝麻粒盖面的芝麻酱烧饼中，就着喝那热豆汁，对嗜好者来说，真有销魂夺魄之感。

但就是这对卖豆汁的夫妇，前几日却惨遭不幸。

他们有一独生女儿，年方二八。父母钟爱此女，既不让她“当垆”，更不令她制作，宠为掌上明珠，满足她的一切要求。，这女儿长得十分美丽——自然是按当时的审美标准衡量。她有着一张鹅蛋脸，双眼细而长，鼻梁平塌而鼻头圆白，一张地道的樱桃小口，上唇的轮廓线呈明显的M形，下巴偏右侧有一颗不大不小的黑痣。

时值丁香盛开的初夏，母亲带着女儿，从丰台姥姥家归来，临近什刹海时，已是夕阳落山之际。满湖新张开的绿荷，在晚风中瑟瑟抖动，岸柳如丝，拂在姑娘的身上，同她腰系的汗巾，以及汗巾上的槟榔香袋相纠缠，姑娘不由得站在湖边，娇喘微微，同母亲暂歇一时，好在再拐两个弯儿，便到银锭桥了。

不料事情坏就坏在她们娘儿俩那一歇。

她们所歇的地方，南边是一片栽满绿荷的湖水，北边隔着一条车道，是一家有名的饭馆——会贤楼。那饭馆是两层楼的格局，楼檐下挂着一溜黑地金字的长牌子，牌子下垂着红布条儿，大有古人所谓“青旗在望”的意思。楼上楼下都是十二开间，全部是磨砖对缝的墙体，楼上还有宽大的绿油栏杆画廊，雅座中的贵客，可以凭栏眺望，对景品酌。偏偏那天有一佻达男子在二楼上凭栏狂饮。他透过绿柳垂丝，一眼望到了那位卖豆汁夫妇的女儿。那佻达男子，便是开头我们提到的那个贝子府的主人，即贝子本人。此人好穿青洋绉衣服，随身总带着一把铁股大折扇，打开来扇面超过半圆，上面画着一只狂浪的黑蝴蝶，凌驾在一片血珠般的花丛上。他两手十指上起码戴着五枚戒指，其中两只是有倒须钩的铁戒指——由此可知其人秉性如何。

当那卖豆汁夫妇的女儿在湖边心情怡悦地歇息时，她万没想到大祸即将临头。当天她穿着一件藕丝单衫，立在晚风中，衬着碧波绿荷，恰似一朵素雅的出水芙蓉。偏她频频伸出纤指，理着被晚风吹乱的鬓发，更显得袅娜多姿，楚楚动人。那贝子从楼上望去，顿时酥掉了半边身子……当那姑娘同母亲回到家中，夫妻父女还来不及叙谈时，贝子已在一群侍从簇拥下，闯入了他们家中。贝子自恃亮出自己的身份后，别说提出要纳那姑娘为妾，就是强要她进府当个“通房”大丫头，卖豆汁的夫妇怕也不得不屈从。

谁知当姑娘和母亲惊恐万分地回避后，那父亲却丝毫不为所动，只是严正地说：“我们高攀不上。我们夫妇二人，只有这么一个女儿，我们只要能招进个白衣女婿，把这豆汁铺维持下去，就心满意足了。”
