《我曾侍候过英国国王》是作者用十八天在“一种轻盈的无意识状态”下完成的。从完稿到出版，他只字未动。赫拉巴尔自己说“无论是《国王》还是《孤独》，我都害怕去读，甚至连一行字也不敢看一眼”。小说以一个餐厅服务员蒂迪尔的打工经历，展示了捷克二十世纪中期的社会变迁。这部作品体现出作家一贯的回忆录式“传记”创作风格，通篇描绘了旅馆、饭店、酒家、餐厅和私人会所的生活，处处流露出布拉格帅克式的幽默、揶揄和调侃。

Author Description

捷克作家博胡米尔·赫拉巴尔（Bohumil Hrabal，1914~1997），这位法学博士为自己设计的一生是这样的：大学毕业后服兵役，做推销员、仓库管理员、炼钢工、废纸回收站打包工、舞台布景工……四十九岁时第一部作品才得以出版，而此后获得国内、国际奖项有三十多个。他的作品多数被改编为话剧和电影。与小说《严密监视的列车》同名的电影于1966年获奥斯卡最佳外语片奖。根据另一部小说《售屋广告：我已不愿居住的房子》改编的电影《失翼灵雀》获1990年柏林影展最佳影片金熊奖。1997年2月3日，这位原本即将病愈出院的作家从医院五楼窗口坠落身亡。

请注意，我现在要给诸位讲些什么。我一来到金色布拉格旅馆，我们老板便揪着我的左耳朵说：“你是当学徒的，记住！你什么也没看见，什么也没听见！重复一遍！”于是我说，在这里我什么也没看见，什么也没听见。老板又揪着我的右耳朵说：“可你还要记住，你必须看见一切，必须听见一切！重复一遍！”于是，我惊讶地重复了一遍说我将看见一切，听见一切。就这样，开始了我的工作。每天早上六点钟，我们就来到大堂，接受一次小小的检阅。旅馆经理驾到。地毯的一边站着餐厅领班和所有服务员，最后一个是我，一个干巴小个儿学徒。另一边站着厨师、客房服务员、厨房打下手的、勤杂工和洗碗工。我们的老板，经理先生打我们身旁走过，检查我们的衬衫和礼服，看我们的领子是否干净，燕尾服上有没有油污，扣子掉没掉，皮鞋亮不亮，他还弯下身来闻一闻，检查我们是不是洗了脚，然后说：“你们好，先生们！你们好，女士们！”于是，我们便不能再跟任何人闲扯了。餐厅服务员们教我怎样将刀叉包在餐巾里。让我打扫烟灰缸。每天我还得清洗装热香肠的铁皮盒子，因为是由我到火车站去叫卖热香肠的。全套活计都是那个已经不再当学徒、成了正式工的人教给我的。哎呀呀，他为了能到火车站去叫卖香肠，可真没少求人家。最初，我对这一点感到有些不解，到后来我就明白了。我最爱干的就是到火车站去向车上的乘客卖香肠这档子差事了。有好几次，我的香肠以一克朗八十哈莱士捷克硬币，一百哈莱士为一克朗。一对卖给人家，可乘客们只有一张二十克朗，有时甚至五十克朗的钞票，而我又没有那么多零钱找给他。即使有，我也只顾继续往下卖，直到乘客们纷纷上车，从窗口探出头，伸出手来让我找钱。我先把热香肠放好，然后在兜里翻找零钱。乘客们大声嚷嚷，说钢镚儿不用找了，把纸币找给他们就行。我却磨磨蹭蹭地在兜里找纸币。哨声响了，我才慢慢掏出该找给乘客的纸币。可是，火车已经徐徐开动。我追在火车后面跑，举着钱，眼看着他的手指就要触着纸币了。有一个人探出一大截身子，以致不得不让人拽住他的腿。还有一个人，他探在窗外的脑袋眼看要碰着站台的柱子，可是后来，他伸着的手指很快离我远去。我气喘吁吁地站在那里，手里捏着纸币。这可就是我的了！很少有旅客回来索取过这些钱。

本书手稿是在强烈的夏日阳光下打出来的。烈日晒得打字机曾多次一分钟内就卡壳一次。我没法直视强光照射下那页耀眼的白纸，也没能将打出来的稿子检查一遍，只是在强光下机械地打着字。阳光使我眼花缭乱，只能看见闪亮的打字机轮廓。铁皮屋顶经过几个小时的照射，热得使已经打上字的纸张卷成了筒。由于最近一年来发生的事件，使我无暇注销亡母的户口，这些事件逼得我将打出来的稿件按原样撂在那里未加改动。我希望有一天，我有时间和勇气仔细琢磨，把这部稿子改得完美一些，或者——在我可以抹去这些粗糙而自然的画面的前提下，只需拿起一把剪刀来处理这份稿子，把其中那些随着时间的推移仍然保持清新的画面剪下来。倘若我已不在人世，就请我的哪位朋友来完成，将这些剪下的画面拼成一部小小中篇或较长的短篇小说吧。就这样。
