第一章
我幼年时代，父亲常常同我讲金阁的故事。
我出生在舞鹤东北一个伸向日本海的荒凉的海角。老家不是这里，而是舞鹤东郊的志乐。按照众人的恳切期望，父亲遁入空门，当了偏僻的海角寺庙的住持，在当地娶了妻子，生下了我。
在成生海角的寺庙附近，没有合适的中学。不久，我便离开双亲膝下，寄宿在老家的叔父家中，从这里徒步走读于东舞鹤中学。
老家阳光充足，但是，在一年之中的11月、12月，即使是万里无云的晴朗日子，一天也要下四五次阵雨。我的变化无常的情绪，可能就是在这块土地上培养起来的。
5月黄昏，从学校回到家里，我经常从叔父家的二楼书斋眺望对面的小山。承受着夕照的翠绿的山腰，恍如在原野中央竖起的一扇金屏风。目睹这番景象，我就联想起金阁来了。
从照片上或教科书里，我经常看到现实的金阁，然而在我心中，父亲所讲的金阁的幻影，远胜于现实的金阁。父亲决不会说现实的金阁是金光闪闪之类的话。按父亲讲述，人世间再没有比金阁更美的东西了。同时，我内心里从金阁这个字面及其音韵所描绘出的金阁，是无与伦比的。
每次看见阳光在远处的水田里闪耀的时候，我都会疑是肉眼看不见的金阁的投影。成为福井县和京都府分水岭的吉场岭，正好坐落在正东的方向。太阳从山岭附近升起。它与现实的京都是正相反的方面，然而我透过山谷的晨曦却看见了金阁高耸云天。
就这样，金阁处处皆是，而在现实里却无处寻觅。在这一点上，它酷似这块土地上的海。舞鹤湾位于志乐村西边四公里多地，海被山峦遮挡，看不见了。但这块土地上总是飘荡着一种预感到海似的东西。偶尔，风丝也送来了海的气息。海上一起风暴，海鸥群就纷纷逃命，飞落在这一带的田野上。
我体弱，不论跑步还是练单杠都输给人家，再加上天生结巴，我就愈加畏首畏尾了。而且大家都知道我是寺庙住持的孩子。顽童们模仿口吃和尚结结巴巴诵经，在取笑我。说书说到结巴的侦探出场的段落，他们就故意让我念给他们听。
结巴，不消说在我和外界之间设置了一道屏障。我很难发好第一个字音，这第一个字音仿佛是打开我的内心世界和外界之间的门扉的钥匙，然而这把钥匙却从不曾顺利地将门扉打开过。一般人通过自由操纵语言，可以敞开内心世界与外界之间的门扉，使它通风良好，可是我怎么也办不到。我这把钥匙完全生锈了。
结巴的人为了发出第一声而焦灼万分。他就好像一只企图从内界浓密的粘鸟胶摆脱出来而拼死挣扎的小鸟，好不容易挣脱出来，却为时已晚矣。诚然，在我苦苦挣扎的时候，外界的现实似乎也有罢手等待着我的情况。可是等待着我的现实，已经不是新鲜的现实。纵令我费尽工夫好容易到达了外界，那里却又总是瞬间变色，完全错位了……于是我想：唯有这样对我才最合适，失去新鲜度的现实，散发着半腐臭的现实，总是横躺在我的眼前。
这样的少年抱有两种相反的权力意志。这是很容易想象出来的。我喜欢阅读有关历史上暴君的书。倘使我是个结巴而寡言的暴君，那么家属们窥见我的脸色，就会终日战战兢兢地生活。我没有必要用明确而流畅的语言来使我的残暴正当化，因为只要我寡言就可以使一切残暴正当化。这样，我总乐于幻想把平日藐视我的教师和同学一个个地处以刑罚。我还乐于幻想我成为内心世界的国王，成为冷静观察的大艺术家。尽管我表面很贫穷，可精神世界却比谁都富有。少年抱有一种难以排除的自卑感，认为自己是被悄悄挑选出来的，这不也是理所当然的吗？我总觉得这个世界的海角天涯，存在着我自己尚未知晓的使命在等待着我。
……我想起这样一段插话。
东舞鹤中学是一座新式的明亮的校舍，它拥有宽敞的体育场，被蜿蜒的群山所环绕。
5月的一天，现就读于舞鹤海军轮机学校的一个中学老校友请假回母校来了。
他晒得黝黑，从深戴的制帽帽舌下露出了挺秀的鼻梁，从头到脚都生气勃勃，一派英雄的气概。在低年级学弟们面前，他畅谈了纪律严格的生活。然而，他在讲述这种理应是凄惨的生活时，却用了仿佛叙说奢侈豪华的生活的口吻。他一举手一投足都充满了自豪和稚嫩，完全懂得自己的谦逊的分量。他的制服胸前绘有蛇纹，他挺起的胸膛活像迎着风浪前进的船首。
他走下了体育场二三级的大谷石石阶，在石阶上坐了下来。四周坐着四五个低年级的同学，在倾听着他的讲述，听得入了迷。5月的郁金香、香豌豆、银莲花、虞美人等各色的花，在斜坡的花圃里争妍斗艳。头顶上的朴树盛开着大朵的白花。
讲的人和听的人都像是尊纪念像，纹丝不动。至于我，则独自一人坐在距他们约两米远的体育场的长凳上。这就是我的礼仪。这是我对5月的花团锦簇，充满自豪的制服和明朗的笑声的一种礼仪。
却说这位年轻的英雄，不去注意他的崇拜者，而更多地注意起我来。在他看来，仿佛唯有我不低于他的威风，这样的感觉伤害了他的自豪感。他向大家打听了我的名字，然后向初次见面的我相呼道：
“喂，沟口。”
我依然不言语，直勾勾地望着他。他冲着我笑了，笑容里含着一种似是掌权者的谄媚的东西。
“怎么不回话呀？你是哑巴吗？”
“是结、结、结巴。”他的一个崇拜者代替我回答了一句。
大家扭着身子笑了起来。嘲笑这种东西是这样的耀眼。对我来说，同班同学那种少年期特有的残酷的笑声，犹如洒满阳光的叶丛那样璀璨夺目。
“什么呀，是结巴？你不想上海军学校吗？结巴嘛，一天就会给你整治好的。”
不知怎的，我竟很快做出了明确的回答。语言流畅与意志无关，一下子脱口说出：
“不上。我要当和尚。”
大家鸦雀无声。年轻的英雄低下头来，摘了身边的一根草，叼在嘴里。
“唔，这样的话，再过几年，也许我还会麻烦你的啊。”
这年，太平洋战争爆发了。
……这时候，我的确产生了一种自觉：我向黑暗的世界张开双臂等待着，不久，5月的花、制服、坏心眼的同学们都将投入我张开的双臂里；我自己要在社会底层紧紧拉住、抓住这个世界……然而，这种自觉成为少年的自豪，未免太沉重了。
自豪必须是更轻松的、明朗的、肉眼清晰可见的、光灿灿的东西。我需求肉眼看得见的东西，需求谁都看得见的成为我的自豪的东西。比如说，他腰间佩带的短剑正是这样的东西。
中学生都向往的短剑，确实是很美的装饰。听说海军学校的学生偷用这把短剑削过铅笔。故意让这样庄严的象征用在日常琐碎生活上，真够气派啊。
有时候，他将脱下的海军学校制服，还有裤子、紧身白衬衣都挂在白漆栅栏上……这些衣服紧挨花丛，散发出一段年轻人的汗臭。蜜蜂误将这些闪烁着白光的衬衣当做花儿，飞落在上面歇息。饰有金丝缎的制帽挂在一栅栏上，恍如端正地深戴在他的头上一样。他接受低年级同学的挑战，到体育场后面的摔跤场去比赛相扑了。
脱下来的这些衣物，给人一种“荣誉坟墓”似的印象，5月的花团簇锦，更加强了这种感觉。特别是帽檐上反射着漆黑闪光的制帽，以及挂在它旁边的皮带和短剑，脱离了他的肉体，反而荡出一种抒情的美，其本身如同回忆一般完整……就是说，看似是年轻英雄的遗物。
我确认了附近无人。摔跤场那边响起了一片喊声。我从兜里掏出生了锈的铅笔刀，悄悄走了过去，在美丽的短剑黑剑鞘里侧，深深地划了两三道难看的刀痕……
……也许会有人根据上面的记述，立即断定我是个有诗人气质的少年。然而，别说诗了，就连笔记一类东西，迄今我也没有写过。我缺乏一种冲动，即一种用别的能力来弥补我不如他人的能力，以此达到超群出众的冲动。换句话说，我要当艺术家，未免太傲慢了。我梦想当暴君或艺术家，然而仅仅停留在梦想，压根儿就无意着手干点什么实事。
不被人理解已经成为我唯一的自豪。所以，那种想要让外界理解我的表现的冲动一次也没有。我觉得命运不赋予我任何能醒人耳目的东西。孤独愈发膨胀。简直就像一头猪。
突然间，我回忆起我们村庄所发生的悲剧性的事件。实际上这一事件与我毫不相干，可不知怎的，我总觉得与我有关，我参与了，这种实际的感觉是无法消失的。
通过这一事件，我一举直面所有的一切，直面人生、官能、叛逆、憎恨、爱情和一切。这样，我的记忆乐于否定和无视其中所蕴含着的崇高的因素。
与叔父家相隔两间屋的一户人家，有位标致的姑娘，名叫有为子。有为子长着一双晶亮的大眼睛。可能是家庭富裕的缘故，她专横跋扈。她虽然受到全家的娇宠，却是非常孤独，有时自己不知在想些什么。妒忌心重的女人背地里议论她大概还是个处女，可她的这种长相才真是个石女相呐。
有为子刚从女子学校毕业就志愿当了舞鹤海军医院的护士。她家离医院不远，可以骑自行车上班。每天她都在拂晓时分离家去上班，比我们上学的时间还早两个多小时。
夏天的一个晚上，我思恋有为子的身体，耽入明郁的空想之中，难以成眠，便摸黑起床，穿上运动鞋，在黎明前的黑暗中走到了户外。
我思恋有为子的身体，并非始自那天晚上。起初偶尔想起，后来渐渐固定下来，恰似思念的结晶体，有为子的身体以一种肉体的形状——白皙、富有弹力、沉浸于昏暗的阴影中、散发出芳香——凝结起来了。我想象着接触它时自己的手指的温馨。还想象着手指上感应的弹力，以及花粉般的芬芳。
我在黎明前的黑暗的道路上一直跑去。石头也没有绊着我的脚、黑暗在我前方自在地开辟了道路。
就在这里，道路变得宽阔了。我来到了志乐村安冈的尽头。这里有一棵巨大的山毛榉树。树干被朝露濡湿了。我藏身在这棵树下，等待着有为子从村那边骑自行车过来。
我等待着，什么都不想干。我气喘吁吁地跑过来，在山毛榉树下休息，之后想干什么，自己也不知道。我一直过着与外界无缘的生活，一旦投身外界，就产生一种幻想，仿佛一切都变得容易，都成为可能了。
库蚊叮了我的脚。鸡鸣四起。我迎亮看了看路上，远处立着一个朦胧的白影。疑是拂晓的曙光，却原来是有为子。
有为子骑着自行车。前灯亮着。自行车无声地滑行过来。我从山毛榉后面跑到自行车前。自行车好不容易紧急刹住了。
这时，我感到自己完全变成了化石。意志、欲望、所有的一切都石化了。外界与我的内心世界无关，它再次坚定地存在于我的周围。我穿着白色运动鞋，从叔父家里跑了出来，沿着黎明前的黑暗的道路一直跑到这棵山毛榉后面，我只不过是沿着自己内心世界的轨迹一个劲地奔跑过来而已。隐约浮现在黎明前的黑暗中的村庄无数屋顶的轮廓、黑魆魆的树丛、长满嫩叶的黑压压的山顶，连眼前的有为子，都变得毫无意义，甚至到了惊人的程度。现实不等我的参与，早就赋予了。而且，这种毫无意义的巨大的黑暗现实，以我迄今未曾见过的分量赋予了我，向我逼将过来。
我如往常一样在思考：恐怕只有语言才能拯救这种情况吧。这是我特有的误解。需要行动的时候，我总是惦记着语言。尽管如此，语言很难从我的嘴里说出，我顾忌它，全然忘却了行动。我觉得行动这个光怪陆离的玩意儿，似乎总是伴随着光怪陆离的语言。
我什么也没有看。但我猜想，有为子起初很害怕，后来发现我之后，就只顾望着我的嘴。大概是在黎明前的黑暗中，她只望见一个微不足道的小黑洞——像野生小动物巢穴似的肮脏而不漂亮的小洞，在毫无意义地蠕动着。也就是说，她只望见我的嘴。在确认从这小洞里不会产生任何一种可与外界联系的力量之后，她才放下心来。
“干吗！你这个结巴还恶作剧！”有为子说。这声音里带有晨风的端庄和清爽。她按过车铃，又骑上了自行车像躲开石头似的避开了我，迂回地驶了过去。有为子远去了，我不时听见在阒无人影的田野的远方传来几下像是嘲笑似的铃声。
——当天晚上，有为子告了我的状，她的母亲上我叔父家来了。我遭到了平日非常温和的叔父的严厉叱责。我诅咒有为子，甚至希望她死去。数月后，这诅咒竟然应验了。从此以后，我确信诅咒是会应验的。
我不论是睡觉还是醒来，都希望有为子死去，但愿我的耻辱的见证人销声匿迹。只要没有见证人，或许耻辱便会从人世间根绝。他人都是见证人啊。尽管如此，只要没有他人，也就不会产生耻辱嘛。我仿佛看见有为子的面孔，在黎明前的黑暗中像水一般晶亮，她直勾勾地盯着我的嘴，她的眼睛的后面存在他人的世界——也就是说，仿佛看见绝不让我们独自存在而主动地成为我们的同谋和见证人的他人的世界。他人必须灭亡。为了我能够真正面向太阳，世界必须灭亡……
那次告状两个月以后，有为子辞去海军医院的工作，闲居家中。村里人议论纷纷。是年秋末，就发生了那一事件。
