我在深夜被吵醒了！
首先，我听到脚步声，主人沉重的脚步声。主人踩着客厅的榻榻米走了过来。
主人这阵子体重剧增，所以我不会听错，虽然以前有时我会把主人的脚步声跟瞒着主人偷偷来看我的太太的弄错。
主人拿起外套，穿上袖子，响起一阵沙沙声，我微微晃了晃，便理所当然地安坐在主人的胸前。
这里是我的老位置，比我更接近主人心脏的，只有主人的警察手册。我从未与他有过交谊。他比我年长许多，总是很忙，或是装作很忙，出于职业的关系，喜好沉默。
“要去哪里？”
太太的声音响起。
主人只回了一句“市里”。这对夫妻的对话总是这样。这是某种仪式吗？
“钱够吗？”
“暂时还够，不够的话再取就好了。”
太太没有作声。正如主人所说，但他甚至没有掏出我来确认。
我，是主人的钱包。
“路上小心。”

当时主人正拿着我，似乎打算确认我怀里的内容，旋即又准备收进老地方。太太走过来，把我拿了过去。
“边角都磨破了。都退成淡褐色了。”

“你记得这是什么时候送给你的礼物吗？是孩子的爸四十岁生日的时候！”
太太都称主人为“孩子的爸”。
“哦？我一直以为是父亲节的时候。”
太太笑出声来。“那一年我和凉子商量，把你的生日礼物和父亲节礼物一并送了，因为这钱包挺贵的。”
凉子是主人的女儿。她一脸认真地盯着陈列我和同伴的展示柜，那张脸我记得非常清楚。
那时，她还是个小女孩。如今这位凉子小姐，明年春天就要上大学了。
“那一年花了笔大钱哪。”主人低声说。
太太回应：“嗯，这倒是真的。”
买了我之后没多久，主人买了房子。房屋贷款就是从那时开始的。
现在，支出已经困难到难以应付的地步。或许这个家原本就是靠主人的力量无法支撑的昂贵商品。
服侍在主人的心脏一侧，目睹着钱财进出的我，非常了解这情况。我很清楚这段对话对主人夫妇而言有多么沉重。
他们在这个月里频频商量是否卖掉房子。
主人说没必要如此悲观，夫人则坚持要卖掉。
“趁还来得及。”太太说道。这件事不管他们怎么谈都没有结果，往往都因主人要出门上班而不了了之。
七年来，我有些耗损了。主人及主人的家计也有所耗损。

太太把我交回主人手里。
“这个还能用。”主人说道，“还是说用旧钱包很丢脸，你不喜欢？”
太太沉默以对。
“买了房子之后，穷得连钱包都买不起，实在叫人笑不出来哪。”
片刻之后，太太悄声说道：
“何必说得那么尖酸？”
太太不止担心钱。她也担心主人，担心主人身负繁重的工作，担心主人的健康每况愈下。即使不担心钱，警察本来就是令人心力交瘁的职业。
她想，那样的话，至少卖掉这房子，多少可以让主人轻松一点。
主人应该也明白她的心意。
我同时也感受到主人在害怕，他在害怕自己，这个时候他总会轻轻地抚着摆放我的位置，也就是心脏。
然后叹息。
今晚，主人坐在出租车上也做了好几次这样的动作。就在我想着主人日渐耗损的心脏时，主人下车了。

“部长刑事①。”
一个年轻的招呼声响起。主人停下脚步。
“啊，我来晚了。辛苦你了。”
“在这里。很惨！”
主人加快脚步，风也更加强劲地扑面而来。
传来喧闹的人声—人很多。警车的无线通讯像被风扯断似的断断续续传来。
“肇事逃逸吗？”
主人蹲下身。我大大地倾斜了。
“这还真惨。”
“不是被撞飞的，好像是被拖行。”
主人站了起来，可能是在环视四周。
“身份呢？”主人问道，并取出笔记本。
“森元隆一，三十三岁，住址是·”
主人记了下来，手腕不停动着。
“他的钱包掉在后方十米处，里面有驾照。钱没掉，有两万多。”
“和驾照上的照片对比，确定是本人吗？”
主人稍作停顿，然后笑了起来。
“哎，别露出那种表情。也有可能是事故之前，不相干的人掉的！”
“有那么巧的事吗？”
“不能说绝对没有。”
年轻的声音变得有些沙哑，很明显不太高兴。
“早就比对过了，确定是本人。”
“不好意思，是我来晚了。我家不比你们值班宿舍，是离市中心单程一个半小时的地方。”
“反正也有人说拿死者生前的照片来对比也没用，都撞得烂成一团了。”
主人随即制止道：“不许这么说。”
年轻的声音沉默了。
“家属呢？”
“打电话到驾照上的住址，没人接。”
“不是电话答录机吧？”
“对。”
“没有通讯录之类的？”
“嗯。”
“钱包里有名片吗？”
“有。”
“是本人的吗？”
“对。他是东洋工程公司的职员。”
“那就给那里打电话，应该会有警卫之类的。让对方提供紧急联系电话，找到同事或上司的话，就找得到家属。”
接着主人四处徘徊，偶尔与人交谈。
主人的脚步声在途中某处变得不一样了，是一种沙沙声。可能是走在未经铺设、像草皮之类的地方。
传来分派、查问工作的声音。来来往往、接近又远去的众多脚步声。远处传来的机械杂音是摄影组的拍摄声。因为和主人朝夕相处，这些声音我都听惯了。
“好，抬出去。”粗粝的声音下达命令。主人开始和那声音交谈。
“你的看法？”粗粝的声音问。
“还不能说什么。询问过发现的人了吗？”
“不，还没有。是名路过的女子。醉得厉害，通报一一○后，就·”
粗粝声音的主人似乎用手比画着什么。根据主人说“哎呀哎呀”这一情况判断，可能是在做呕吐的动作。
“她在休息。我想也该询问她事情的经过了。”
“是年轻女孩吗？”
“二十二三岁吧。”
“喝得烂醉，而且在这种时间独自走夜路？”
“听说是和男伴吵架了。”
“真是个狠角色。”
“时下的女孩子啊！”
主人抚了一下我所在的胸口。我想他应该是下意识的，可能是想起了女儿。
接着主人把手放在腹部，停顿片刻，说道：
“被害人没有别领带夹！”
粗粝的声音回道：“啊？是吗？”
“嗯，我没看到。那种东西，就算被车撞了，也不可能会掉到哪儿去，可能是本来就没有吧·”
“你很在意吗？”
“有点。”主人语带笑意地说，“但我想应该没什么大不了。”
粗粝的声音不置可否，只是如呻吟般说道：
“这一带可能不太会有目击者。”
看来这里似乎是杳无人迹的寂寥之地。
“正是适合杀人的地点。”主人若无其事地说。
“你觉得是有预谋的？”
“还不能断定。”
“因为被拖行吗？”
“我不认为是单纯的意外。头部被殴，似乎受了致命一击。”
