大师写过一本关于彼拉多审判耶稣的小说，受到批判后，惊恐之下烧毁了手稿，进了精神病院。大师失踪后，玛格丽特到处寻找，遇见撒旦的随从，得到回春脂，恢复青春，经历许多奇事后，终于救出大师。在撒旦的指引下，大师和玛格丽特的灵魂越过莫斯科的麻雀山，飞向永恒的家园。

米·布尔加科夫，出生于乌克兰基辅市一个神学教授家庭，自幼喜爱文学、音乐、戏剧，曾梦想当歌剧演员。九岁时初读《死魂灵》，便深深爱上了果戈理独特的讽刺艺术风格。但中学毕业后，却考入基辅大学医学院，毕业后从事医生职业。一九二○年弃医从文，开始文学生涯。两年后，他开始在《汽笛报》工作，发表了一系列短篇小说、特写和小品文，揭露并讽刺不良社会现象，以幽默和辛辣的文风著称。他的中篇小说《不祥的蛋》（1925）在社会上引起强烈反响，受到高尔基等人的重视。但不久，他被批评为作品严重反对苏维埃，根据他的长篇小说《白卫军》（1925）改编的剧本《图尔宾一家的命运》和话剧《逃亡》被斯大林斥责“为白卫分子辩护”，连同《佐伊卡的住宅》（1926）、《紫红岛》（1928）一并遭到禁演。此后，他的任何作品都无法通过审查，但布尔加科夫依然坚持写作，一九二八年他开始了一生最重要的长篇小说《大师和玛格丽特》的创作，直到逝世。一九六六年，《大师和玛格丽特》在布尔加科夫去世二十六年之后经删节、改动后首次在苏联出版。一九六九年小说完整俄文版在法兰克福出版，从此走向世界，被公认为二十世纪俄罗斯最伟大的小说之一。
